I looked at the cargo but went for the direct4x4 clam shell instead. Suspect they both.come from the same dealer in china but the direct4x4 has.more room and is £800 cheaper.

From my experience a hard shell roof tent is better.
They're quick to put up/down. They don't rustle so much in the wind. You can sit up in some of them by resting against the roof supports. I have the Bundutop https://bundutec.co.za/bundutop/ It's a great bit of kit but quite a bit more expensive than the Tentbox. |

I have a tentbox classic, bought it before the prices went up about 18 months ago. We’re very pleased with it, it does exactly what we want it to, undo the 4 clips, pop it up and jump in. The only downside is that it’s a tad small for two people and the two dogs but thats easily remedied by kicking the wife out
  .
I did a fair amount of research to which type of roof tent would suit us best and immediately ruled out the soft shell option as thought it would be too noisy-flappy. It was a tough call between the cargo and the classic as I would have definitely liked the option of roof bars the cargo has, but wasn’t set on the amount of space the clam shell design offers. All in all, seems a well made piece of kit and does the job, would recommend  . |

Having recently replaced my direct4x4 clamshell with a pop top roof, I've sold my soft shell roof tent that I had on the trailer and am currently fitting the hardshell to my Penman.
Should then have the best of both worlds, me in the pop top with the diesel heater whirring away and the kids on top of the trailer

I'm going to mount it higher so I have a big more cargo room in the penman.

Not much help as I bought my Tent Box Classic last year from Costco online and saved over £700 due to a price increase with TentBox but not Costco
BUT it’s still sat with the wrapper on in the garage 
Hopefully soon. |

If you mount a soft shell onto the roof of a decent car, I find the height is becoming a real pain especially tucking in the tent under the cover and the zip fouling etc. Any hard shell solution will be much easier. On trailer access is so much better that the fiddling required is hardly an issue.
I would imagine that a hardshell will be less spacious in use, yet much larger to store and handle.. decisions decisions.. |
