It may be that it is just inherrent. Bear in mind Defenders drive train and chassis is more like a truck than a cars. There are lots of joints, transfer box, large gearbox, larger clutch than a car and everything is big and beefy. Add to that the fact that compared to a modern saloon car the sound proofing is pants then you do get a lot of clanking and clonking going on.
I am not trying to play down your concerns but it depends what your benchmark is. I have had several Defenders and so I bought this one knowing a lot more of this noise is normal than if it were my first. |

In extreme off road situations the prop rubs on the sump. Most likely that, LR did do a new sump, but you have to moan like to get it. 2019 MY Disco 5 HSE Lux

Could be a couple of things:
1) could be the diff casing hitting the sump - you can tell because there would be witness marks on the sump. If yours is a later (late 07 build?) they may have already replaced it with the new design - again, you can tell because there would be a notch out of the front corner. 2) could be the transmission brake rubbing. This happens when the transmission warms up on some vehicles. The drum brake is not round (it should be) and so it rubs and binds as the engine slows. However - this isn't an off-road problem so you'd be able to detect it on longer journeys as you cruise up to traffic lights - there would be a juddering (very loud and noticeable if it is there at all) in the transmission. You can exacerbate it by bringing the LR to a halt on the handbrake from very low speeds. Solution is to replace the transmission brake. LR will try and 'adjust' it by slackening it off but that doesn't work. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

I didn't have to moan like to get mine changed !
Intact it was the exact opposite ! I asked them not to do it and they told me they had got to do it and failure to fit a new one after I had requested the diffy one to stay would invalidate any claims that I may have regarding the sump in the future ? Check with your dealer and I'm not being arrogant here but if my dealer would have moaned to me about a warranty claim I would have dragged him over the counter ! DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN |

Our three were changed when the vehicles went in for warranty work. I presumed that there must have been a re-call type thing.

Yes, there was some kind of a recall - ours went in for it in the last 2 months. New sump and a pipe (i'm racking my brain and can't remember what it was). Perhaps a brake pipe thinking about it now. |

Brake pipes, we found out the hard way when we lost the fluid.
