Opinions on a pick up please!
I may sell or put my Series 109 into retirement and just use it as a bit of fun. With a budget of around 8K I need a load bay that is 6' long with tilt or hard top. 8K doesn't get you much in Defender terms although a nice Tdi hard top would be just the job, what about the Toyota Hilux and it's kind. They would be cheaper to buy and more modern but I couldn't get 3 kids in the front for the school run I don't think! Any bright ideas? A van would do and be the cheapest option but that really is boring Sad

What are you looking for that the Series II doesn't provide? Reliability? Economy? Comfort and mod cons? That will help to narrow down what's a viable alternative.

As an alternative alternative, how about a decent sized box trailer behind your 110? Darren

All of the above Laughing economy is not a priority, nor is comfort, or mods cons, but getting the Series through MOT's is getting to be a pain in the ass. E.G. I had to put on new suspension all round last year, this year i will have to fix/re-build a wiper motor, put on a new exhaust, put in new wiring for a side light, fix the indicator switch and pay someone to sort the brakes out. Its a 49 year old vehicle that is on it's original everything so has been on borrowed time for decades (testament to the vehicle!). It would be nice to have something easier to drive for school runs and work and a vehicle you could just book in for any work and get it through an MOT. It's very hard to find anyone that will or can do a proper job keeping these old girls on the road and I would rather spend the time doing something else. A later model something will be easier to keep going, no 49 year old chassis, electrics, engine, axles etc etc I have been lucky so far but it will all come up soon! A 70,000 mile Defender might be the answer or an even younger Jap thing!

Towing is a pain in the ass, especially with a long wheel base! I have a trailer but only use it now for larger loads. Hitching/unhitching every day and securing it, unloading it and having to unhitch it to get out of tight spots at clients places Sad It's a lot easier to throw your stuff in the back of a truck and go and definitely easier after a hard days work... people avoid trailers if they can! A big van is the best & cheapest option but I fancied something more interesting.

Well if it's interesting you are looking for, how about all of the above but with a 5.4 litre V8?

Surely the answer is a pickup trailer...

However, more seriously, I know what you mean about being a pain to reverse in tight spots. A pickup is also a lot less likely to get stolen.

My Dad has a Toyota Hylux pick up. Only 2 wheel drive but it's a great tool for the farm/ engineering/ construction projects. It's 12 years old, bought from new, never been too precise about service intervals but it's never missed a beat. It had to jump start all the tractors last winter as it was the only reliable motor on the farm. Reasonably car like to drive as well.

I don't know about the newer ones but it does seem really good value compaired to Defender prices.

If you don't mind the extra tax and insurance of another vehicle I'd opt for a Hylux. Top gear did some great advertising for it a few years ago. Shame they didn't do the indestructible tests on a Defender.

Now you're thinking along the right lines! Or a 110 hi-cap? Or why don't you just get a 130 and be done with it?! In for a penny, in for a pound and all that! Wink Admittedly, a Hilux is going to be the far better bet in terms of general day to day use, but come on, where's the soul? 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Agree with Green Machine.

And I know someone who has a nice 130 DC pickup for sale within that sort of budget, 300TDI and ground up rebuild about 5 years ago. If you are interested it's in this nomth's comics classifieds or PM me if you are interested and I'll put you in touch. Fully Restored 89 110 CSW V8

Thanks AJ a 130 would be too long to get in driveway but sounds nice. I think I will be relying on the 109 a bit longer though as I have almost sealed the deal and blown the budget on this! Whistle Very Happy

Get yourself an Ifor Williams tipping trailer, pulling a trailer around is a dam site cheaper than insuring and running a second vehicle, for your new vehicle budget you could have the Series re-built!

Seems like a no-brainier to me.

Trailers are a pain in the ass for reason already explained, it's OK if you can drive home leave the gear in and just park up somewhere without unhitching, unloading, locking etc, but I have to unload in the road (if there is space for me to get car & trailer in which is not always possible so have to block the road!...........bla bla.........unbhitch to turn around on the job, unload eveything if it is a tipper cos it will all get nicked....bla bla trash your Defender by putting eveything in the back - done that....................................................... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

No, trailer is no good for me, been there done that, bought a nice boat now anyway Very Happy so time to get working on the 109 for it's MOT Mad
