Factory Premium Audio issue
I bought a set of factory premium speakers with an Alpine sub a while back and I thought that I would chuck them on today.

I started with swapping the original passenger front speaker for a premium one and gave it a quick test before refastening the speaker to the lower dash, all good.

But when I swapped the drivers side I ran into an issue. Suddenly the speakers didn't work, or at least they were extremely quiet. And for the life of me I couldn't find a setting on the Alpine head unit that fixed it.

All the speakers have been checked with a multi meter and are all fine.

Am I missing something?

It's a factory Alpine head unit with an Alpine SWE-1200 sub and TDCI tweeters in a 2006 Td5.

Freddie,
Did you switch off the head unit when you swapped the wires, and have you tried putting the original speakers back into see if everything still works correctly. Maybe you shorted the wires out, or has a wire been trapped or maybe nicked by one of the screws.

Hi Andy,

Radio was off when I swapped the speakers and I have since put the original ones back on and they work just fine. I did have a play around with settings and I got very quiet and bassy sound from the premium versions but somethings not right.

Are they the same resistance rating as the original speakers, you should find it printed somewhere on the speaker body ?

They don’t have a rating on them, only a part number.

They do have a much larger magnet compared to the original ones.

What is puzzling me is that when I only swapped one it worked but swapping 2 is no good.

Have you tried both speakers one at time on the passenger side. This would highlight a faulty speaker.
If both work ok, then repeat one at a time on the drivers side.
If still ok then it could be the head unit that cannot drive the speakers or the rating of the speakers is too high.

Freddie,

Look up the part number on line, this should hopefully tell you what the resistance is in ohms. Do your original speakers have an ohms rating on them ?

I haven't but I've tested all the speakers with a multimeter and then all give the same reading.

I can't find the specs online when using the part number.

But after a bit of forum research I may have found the issue. I think the premium speakers (LR040868) are 150W and the standard ones are 50W and the Alpine CDE 133 BT head unit has a max output of 4x50W.

So how did Land Rover get around that because as far as I can tell they used the same head unit for the standard and premium audio setups?

Never altered the sound system on mine ( 2015 XS)
Does the Alpine sub unit contain an additional amp?
Might be worth checking the wiring to the sub.

Do your speakers have the dimple in the centre of the mesh grill?

There is an amp for the Alpine sub but I thought that was only for the sub itself.

Don't get confused between max output and how much power they take to drive. I used to drive 400w 6x9s in previous cars with the radio's own internal amp and it would rattle the door glass.

Audio power is the electrical power transferred from an audio amplifier to a loudspeaker, measured in watts. The electrical power delivered to the loudspeaker, together with its efficiency, determines the sound power generated (with the rest of the electrical power being converted to heat).

The impedance, in ohms, is how hard they are to drive and most car speakers are 4 ohm. The standard head unit should be able to drive the speakers (not the sub) without any drama at all, the 150w capacity of the speakers means they are capable of handling more oomph than the Apline head unit can give.

Have you altered anything else along the way or have you simply unscrewed one pair of speakers and connected the new pair?

All I've done is add a factory Alpine sub with amp and I've not had any problems until I tried to swap the speakers.

How have you connected the sub? Have you taken a speaker level output to the amp or have you used the RCA preouts?

I used the RCA outputs. It's wired as it would have been in the factory...I think.

If you disconnect it does that affect the output from the new speakers?
