It isn’t something I’ve had, read, or know off. So in my opinion, no it’s not common.

I look after a few defenders which are used for trips around Crete I have welded quite a few so think it's something that happens with time and stress of the metal

The crack has certainly propagated (increased/ spread) due to fatigue.
It has started immediately at the end of the stiff section of the bracket, where the bottom stiffening flange stops. The change in stiffness concentrates stress at that point. There may have been a small crack in the bracket when it was manufactured, due to the shearing and forming of the material. The crack could have started there. If it was mine, I would reinforce the whole area with a plate the same thickness as the original bracket. |

Thanks, yes agree the crack follows a predictable path. The bracket was slightly bend downwards as if it had received a hit at some point.
It is a 2002 but I do have a 1999 chassis chopped in bits lying around and interestingly the same bracket on that frame is much smaller (less wide) so for some reason they changed that. I think the shorter span of the shorter bracket is probably stronger as it will flex less. Anyhow as I could not be bothered to drill an elongated hole so I just cut the one bracket off to create a doubler plate which I welded in from below. I will check maybe use a longer bolt into the mount, but much stronger now. |
