Private Number Plates
My brother has a private reg on a car he's owned since he was 16, but the car has been off the road for probably 12-15 years.

He's finally admitted he hasnt really got the time to get the car back on the road (although it might becoming worthwhile financially) but would like to remove the registration number before getting rid of the car.

Can anyone confirm, is getting the car MOT'd the only way the DVLA will allow the removal of the plate? Or is there another way?

Thanks 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

?

I've removed number plates in the past and an age related plate is assigned during the process. Not sure where the MOT comes into it.

You may be lucky.... taken from https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-re...number-off

Take a private number off a vehicle

You can apply to take a private (personalised) number off a vehicle if you want to either:

keep the number to use later
assign it to another vehicle

You cannot keep a number starting with ‘Q’ or ‘NIQ’.

The vehicle’s original registration number is usually reassigned to it automatically when you take off a private number.

If your application is successful you’ll be sent a V778 retention document and a new log book (V5C).

You must have your V778 and new log book before you scrap or sell your vehicle - otherwise you’ll lose the right to use the private number.
Eligibility

The vehicle must:

be registered with DVLA in the UK
be able to move under its own power
be of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
be available for inspection - DVLA will contact you if they need to inspect your vehicle
have been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years
be taxed currently or have a SORN in place - if it’s had a SORN in place for more than 5 years, it must be taxed and have an MOT certificate

If you have a historic (classic) vehicle you’ll also need a current MOT certificate, even if your vehicle is usually exempt from MOTs.
Apply to take off a number

You can apply online or by post. It costs £80. You must have the vehicle’s log book (V5C).

If the vehicle’s not in your name, you have to apply by post.
Apply online

The number will be removed immediately if your vehicle does not need an inspection.

You can assign the number to another vehicle as soon as you’ve applied to take it off - use the reference number you get after you apply.

So, long and short is that it needs an MOT. If it’s a classic and doesn’t need an MoT anymore (I think for vehicles registered before 1984 now?), the DVLA will probably want a ‘courtesy’ MoT to prove its roadworthy and still exists - I’ve just had to do this in the last couple of weeks on a classic car.

Easiest thing to do is go online and ‘give it a go’. Apply for the reg to be put on retention or assign it to another vehicle.

If you want to assign it to a vehicle there and then you can, but will need to pay the transfer fee which is £80.

If you want to put it on retention you have to pay the assignment/retention fee (£80) but you are then free to transfer it to a vehicle without paying any further money, at a later date.

When you apply for the retention on the DVLA site, you’ll either be successful there and then, or you’ll get a list of requirements as to why they can’t do it. They may ask you to get an MOT and then send this (even though they can see an MOT online) and fill in a form and post it to DVLA (which is what I’ve just had to do).

I did get a response back in 2 weeks and have now have my old plate on retention. If the company that was supposed to make my new plates (complete with correctly sized defender rear plate) had not made a complete mess of printing three letters and two numbers onto a piece of plastic, and would answer their emails (no phone number on site), it would be on my 90 now….

Thanks for the replies all, and you've confirmed pretty much what we thought.

This car has been SORNed since 2007 (longer than i thought) so they are going to want it MOTing. Not beyond the realms of possibility as I know last time he checked it over (about 18 months ago) it was pretty solid still and it ran but it's still going to need a few £££ throwing at it.

However that in itself could be worthwhile as it's a Mk4 escort rs turbo replica (effectively a full rs turbo just the wrong sunroof) and they've been climbing in price for a while 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

( be taxed currently or have a SORN in place - if it’s had a SORN in place for more than 5 years, it must be taxed and have an MOT certificate )

that's a bit silly that, what if the motor in question turns out to be practically to far gone for an MOT, that's been sat on a driveway, waiting to be put back on the road. Say some MAX Power car shed with a private plate, but want to move the plate over to say a new family motor. Or a car that was once ran a private plate, but has now been turned into a racing car. ( I know someone who turned a show car into a racing car)

I think DVLA need to rethink that one like. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Its been that way for time immemorial and is basically to stop people profiteering from a 'barn find' and profiting from a long lapsed plate

But before MOT became mandatory, a mate of mine bought a “1” number from a broker and was delivered what he thought was an old bicycle frame and the necessary paperwork to put the plate on his car. Some weeks later he was contacted to ask why he hadn’t returned the frame (he’d thrown it away). It turned out that it was the frame of a 1928 motor bike or something silly, but with its original “chassis” number and the company’s way of buying, selling and transferring exclusive numbers. They were most irate!

I remember that process.

There is a number plate dealer down the road from where I grew up and the "garden" of the plot was always chock full of knackered old mopeds they were "using" to store the plates on to save paying retention fees 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Arghhh that makes sense. But the retention fee is not expensive.

Correct, the DVLA will re-claim the plate and profit from it themselves.

Its not but traditionally it was an annual fee, so if your sat on a number of plates for a while forking out £80 soon errodes the profit 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Did they not change that and now it’s a 10 year retention period. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Yes, now 10 years or let me put it this way, I’ve had two plates on retention purchased direct from the DVLA website in 2016 and I haven’t had any demands for retention fees yet. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!
