[Wanted] Defender 110 (XS spec, TD5 and LHD)
Hello,

I am planning to do some overlanding in Africa and Asia - I am looking for a Defender 110, left-hand drive, XS spec (or with retrofitted AC). Happy to consider an existing expedition build that someone is looking to sell on assuming service history and condition are acceptable.

A 2004-2006 model would be ideal.

Thanks - I could only find a single TD5 110 with LHD but don't think it has air conditioning/XS spec.

There are a couple of TDCi ones on there but I'm trying to avoid anything with a ford engine as going to be difficult to repair in Africa

Yep I saw that, about double what I can pay though unfortunately, also wanted to stick with a TD5 for repairability

Is buying a really high mileage one a bad idea? I guess the resale value is always going to be poor but is it possible to have them reconditioned so they're at least semi-reliable (and how much does that cost?)

This one might do the job (though can't tell if it's a TD5?)

That is a post 2002 Td5.

The benefit of a tdci is that you have a functional AC if fitted. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Yup but I am worried that if something goes wrong with a TDCI it's going to be alot more of a pain to get fixed.

Regarding functional AC, are you saying the AC on TD5 land rovers is not?

I live in relatively hot climate, but distances are short (you get there before the car fully cools down). I like the AC to be blowing cool air in the face. Hence my daily is a VW. I find the tdci a bit weak with just one vent / person that you can adjust. On Td5 and earlier, the vent locations are not optimal, and cannot reach the face. However I cannot comment how they perform on longer journeys. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
