The only thing i can think of is the heavy weight of it, a heavy lossy drivetrain and an engine choked by emissions control. I recently had a chat to my dad about the mentioned fuel consumption and he rightly pointed out that when he had a 2004 L322 it was better than that. He'd usually get 25mpg from a similar weight vehicle with a bmw straight 6 diesel.

That is an interesting video, and there is a lot to like. I am surprised that the axle difflocks are only operable in low range though (although I can perhaps understand why), and I think that the the towing fitting is probably the most sensible that I have ever seen on a production vehicle. It is extremely evident that a lot of thought by people who understand what the vehicle is for has gone into the vehicle. There are only two things so far that I don't like, namely the fuel consumption and the price! |

Agree but not on the emission control. Efficiency and aerodynamic are poor. Same petrol engine and gearbox in my X545E and on a flat (dead flat) battery i can achieve mid to high 30s. Same family engine in a Z3, 20years ago and it was circa 17 to 25mpg |

Reality is harsh, I'd rather have a 2.4TDCI van and an L322 TDV8 for half the price to cover my commercial and hauling needs. |

Different models for different countries I beleive. In the UK I think there are reseller and service agents via some large agricultural centres, plus some dedicated show rooms. But as a start up company I suspect this will evolve and change as time passes. And if the vehicle is successful, then expect there to be more. But there will never be a dealer in every town. But the same is true of many other low volume vehicles. e.g. I think Lotus only has 13 dealers across the entire UK. |

Sadly whatever engine or gearbox it has or how much it has been fettled, an old Defender is still noisy, uncomfortable and flawed.
I seriously looked at Twisted Defender before buying my L663 but it was too much of a compromise. |

The old Defender isn't compromised, it was built for a specific set of circumstances and uses. The new one is more compromised in many respects.
You don't buy a Defender for comfort, although I do 10k miles a year in my TD5 and don't find it a compromise and im 6'4. I had an L322 before that and while it was quieter it wasn't enough to make me regret going back to a Defender. |

Well I would say that a Twisted Defender is a compromise. Because you cannot make a Defender like a modern car and any attempt to will be a disappointment. To me the more original a defender the better and use it for what it is - refreshingly different than anything else.

As above really
l did 90,000 miles in my 110 TD5 and had no issues with it. The vehicle was built for a purpose and it did it very well. There was nothing on the old Defender that wasn't there for a purpose, no concessions to fashion or other stuff that it didn't need. The trouble with "uprated" old Defenders is it increases the expectation and it's still an old Defender underneath despite the bolted on tat and quilted interior sh*t that is thrown at them. The best original Defender is the 300tdi closely followed by the TD5. The Puma is okay but again, with a Discovery dashboard and other "improvements" people expect it to be an alternative to a modern 4x4 |

Not really sure what people expect but did just over 100miles (not exactly a marathon but a decent single stint) on Sunday in my late Puma 90 and was never uncomfortable or noticed any undue noise, etc but then I do drive in a specific way which I find compliments its character (rarely above 60mph for starters)
My daily is a 150K Transporter T5 (also have a choice of various other Subaru's, etc) and whilst superior in most respects like its ability to cruise in "autobahn" mode I appreciate their various aspects rather than expecting each one to perform identically |

Nothing is going to replace the old Defender, the nearest thing was the new Suzuki Jimny which has the same underpinnings
Drives like a Defender as well, but more refined, will happily sit at 70mph for instance. The only issue is it is a bit small. Sadly now discontinued although there's a Commercial version, but it's sold out, you can't get one. |

The thing is, many things have replaced the Defender, the biggest replacement is the Japanese pickup. Even when LR was still producing the Defender it was loosing sales to pickups.
The Defender was great in its time but the world moved past it as it failed to develop. And before you shoot me, I know the new Defender I have is not from the same heritage or ethos. If you look at the old Defender market it's been replaced not by Jimenys but by pickups. |

Yeah the Jimny is too small, shame it wasn't 20% larger.
l think the Grenadier will fill the gap left by the old Defender. The only issue for me would be the fuel consumption. The petrol version is definitely out, the diesel is a possibility |
