Help an idiot with oil seal direction
Wise ones
Just changing the rear hub oil seals and my new seal is stamped with one side towards stub axle.
Am I right in thinking that this side faces out front the rear of the hub towards the centre of the car?
What I should have done was check the old one before I yanked it out, but that sort of thing is for sensible people

Thanks
Wes Oh woe, oh woe
My crusty old landrover,
It will not go.

That is a great way of showing the direction of the seal!

Why thank you sir Thumbs Up A picture as they say... Thumbs Up

On seals like this one that have a hollow internal half and a sticky-outy half the hollow half always goes towards the greasy bearings and the sticky-outy half to the outside towards the elements.

What on earth has been going on with that stub axle? What caused the damage?

I have no idea, but I wouldn't use it. Looks almost like it has been welded and ground down again. Shocked
