Thought I'd finally put up some piccies of my new(ish) beast. It's a late-2005 110 Td5 CSW. Very pleased so far, done about 8k including a trip round Ireland and no niggles at all yet.
Plan is to keep it fairly standard-looking but upgrade a few key things. Done so far:

Yup, been out with the Waxoyl already and some Dinitrol is high up the list. Chassis looks like it's been treated in the past which is good.
The rear door on my old Td5 was the worst offender so that's getting some serious attention; however this has the newer design which seems a lot less flimsy. |

In the last week or so I've fitted Wipac crystal headlamps, some front recovery points, and a NK engine blanket.
Big lesson on the crystal lamps: I'd gone for the ones with a 'pilot' light, planning to wire this up as a sidelight, as my CSW does not have dim-dip and the sidelights are pants. However when I came to fit the bowls, the gland for the pilot light bulb is at 6 o'clock, same position as the levelling motor! This means the wires protruding out the back foul on the levelling ring and motor. I got around it in the end by making up a 90-degree connector rather than a straight through one, but I've still had to disconnect the headlamp levelling, as on any setting other than '0' the wires would be crushed between the bowl and the levelling ring! Fortunately the 110 is just used as a big estate rather than heavily laden on a regular basis, but I'm trying to come up with a solution so I can have both. Weirdly my old Td5 van didn't have headlamp levelling, even though it had much softer rear springs and frequently had half a tonne of building waste put in the back of it! The NK blanket arrived today and after fitting, it has made a definite difference - though not quite as much as I thought. Maybe I was expecting Rolls-Royce levels of interior noise? Anyway, takes a bit of effort to get it tucked right down the back of the engine without burning your hands on the turbo or other bits. Best done with a cold engine really. |

why are you looking at the "Ashcrofts ratio magic" - from an economy or noise point of view ?

More a driveability point of view really - anything over 65 is intolerably loud, and the engine just sounds like it's revving way too high. Mind you, I do live in quite a hilly area, so I'd probably want to get it remapped first and then see if the gears feel too short. |

I had the ashcroft magic applied to my 2003/110/td5 and it made an immense difference to the noise levels, and maybe a little improvement on economy (The low ratio is not affected by the mod.) but do the math, it might be worth considering an overdrive and selling the OD seperately when the time comes.
also, with a quieter car at 60-70, you'll loose the economy if your right foot is a little heavey |
