Good to see another positive story about LR Assist. They came out to me the other week after I got an intermittent "suspension fault" message. Plugged in the laptop and updated the software and it's been fine since.

I asked why this could not be done over the air, and apparently it's down to the 12v battery not being up to the job.

It was good to chat to the bloke - he was a LR enthusiast and answered many of my questions about the car.

I doubt they would do that, at least not officially, as it would invalidate the emissions figures the car is sold on - à la VW’s emissions fiddling.

Aftermarket though no problem.

I think the stop start on the defender is one of the best I have experienced. I’m quite happy to keep it!

Totally agree with the stop start, far better than my last Volvo. If I get stuck in stop start traffic I tend to switch it off , but that’s an easy press of a button. It is a good system, and only really annoying in start/stop traffic as you say.

It’s not so much disabling it, but getting it to remember the last setting so that if you turn it off it stays off. Then you can turn it back on when conditions are suitable. Or leave it off completely if preferred.

Restoration of user choice is the key, rather than having it dictated to us. Same as the driver ‘assistance’ features (emergency braking and lane keeping) which would it would be very nice to be able to disable properly.

I think you will find that due to emission regulations it must default to being on. Similar to the new regulation that speed limiter must default to on for new cars built now. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

Yes lane keeping is either off or on, no problem. If left on it doesn’t actually work till about a speed of 40 mph and the symbol turns to green. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

Lane keeping can be turned off and stays off. The emergency lane keeping is on by default at each ignition cycle. It’s the one that intervenes and steers you away from the edge of the road, and is very annoying when driving on single track roads.

Yep the lane keeping is very annoying, can't think LR ever tested it on single track roads, steers you right, then realises you are going to hit hedge on right and steers you left. Bloody nightmare

Doesn't do anything on mine, been down some very narrow tracks where the verge/hedge is six inches away on each side.

No intervention by the vehicle except for a beeping noise every so often. Obviously this has been at under 40mph, but today l was on some narrow roads at over 40mph and nothing happened even when l had to get very close to the side when cars were coming the other way.

One issue l am still noticing although it might be just how it is, with the transmission

lf you are driving slowly in traffic, walking speed or a bit faster, and it's slightly downhill
When you apply the gas, the revs jump up and the transmission takes a fraction of a second to catch up, and then engages suddenly.

It can be avoided by selecting "S" and then "2" which makes it stay in second gear. Then it's smooth!
So l assume the slight thud is the transmission decision to engage first gear.

l will get the transmission oil level checked first because it's exactly the symptoms of low oil level.
