3.9 on SUs - which cam?
It's a std 3.9 9.35 block which has been re-bored, decked, the heads have been skimmed as well. That alone will up the CR a bit further. It's staying on carbs and I'd like to keep the drivability of the V8 so not too peaky.

Question: What Cam to keep the nice low end grunt?

Is the Real Steel Hurricane any good or should I be looking at a Kent H180? 90 V8 CSW - 1988

I ran the same setup and used the standard camshaft and BDR profile needles.

Thanks - I have already switched to BBWs and it's made a massive difference to drivability.

My thinking is that a slightly improved cam will just give that extra 'spark' over a std one. 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Do you have the 3.9 exhaust setup?

Probably as well to get the distributor rebuilt and give the ignition system a refresh - Lumenition is another thing to consider.

No more faffing around with points gap and suffering the results of vaiable condensor quality, just a consistent spark under all conditions.

Red line is pretty low on that Crower cam, admittedly the Rover V8 isn't great at high engine speeds but 4500rpm?

Indeed, though I must say I don't find it lacking in the low box and in high it cruises along just nicely. As you say these old pushrod two valve engines shouldn't work too hard...having said that my previous work V8's never died no matter how badly we treated them!!!

This is my first Defender V8/LPG with the engine installed as is when I bought it so I'm keen to learn about it over this winter.

Took a long look at lift and duration of the various 'high torque' cams and decided on a standard one. The lift was only a fraction down, but the duration was better than most.

Engine is in the process of being fitted, so time will tell as to whether I'm happy with it. 90 V8 CSW - 1988
