Heater Fan Control Cable

Can anyone advise how to release this cable from the spigot on the fan speed control lever please?

Replace the unit. Not cheap but the easiest way to go. The cable on my daughter's 300tdi broke so the unit was swapped out for a new one. I do not know if you can get a cable on its own.
