TD5 10p vs. 15p Engine question
Hi,

I bought myself a 2002 110 with the 10p engine. Surprisingly, she comes with a spare engine on a crate. as informed its a revised 15p.

Obviously I'll need to get the 15p inspected but if it is indeed revised - would it make sense to replace the 10p with it? And also, would I need to get an ECU for it? with other cars there are aftermarket ECU's available. Would this be feasible?

When a revision is done on a 15p - are there specific modifications that are recommended to enhance the reliability or the power output?

thanks

Interesting because the changeover to 15P was 2002, my January 2002 Defender has a 15P motor in it. Are you sure yours is a 10P?

the 10th number i the vin is a 2 - as I understand that should be a 2002 model? - saturday I'll know more when I take over the physical ownership on the car .. the current owner told me that the engine is a 10p ... would hope he knew what he's been driving for the past 15 years ...

Worth having a look just to satisfy yourself as mine is definitely 15P and is an early 2002 construction. Fuel pressure regulator 2 pipe version, exhaust down pipe with cat and cooled EGR are hallmarks of 15P as far as I understand.

But, with all things Land Rover, I never fail to be surprised!

Why does the owner have a spare engine, was there something wrong with the one that's currently fitted?
TD5 engines aren't exactly rare, so it doesn't make any sense to keep a spare one.

It's worth bearing in mind that when talking about the spec. of an '02 Defender (or any car), it's referring to the '02 model year, which would have started in August 2001. That doesn't particularly explain why the OP's '02 has a 10p engine, unless it's a very early one and slipped through, but does mean that yours isn't early in that particular year. Darren

Got the car at home finally.

definitely needs maintance as the engine and the gearbox are seeping fluids. My guess is the previous owner was just to cheap to get the gaskets fixed. its a 2A6 vin number definitely a 2002 make. Also figured out that it was rolled out the factory in October with being street registered in Nov 2001. So i guess both blocks are 15p. Which is a good thing as an engine swap becomes much easier now.

Was a bit surprised that the 10 years owner had so little knowledge on his car (they christened the car even with a name).

Why two engines .. well if one breaks you have spares at hand. Got for my other oldtimer also two spare ones. one finished rebuilding, the other one old and untouched.

I might be wrong. But didn’t the 15p defender get the centre dash. Quite a few other changes like the doors.

Essentially, yes, but there's always been a suspicion that it wasn't a clean changeover for the engine and that a few early '02MY models still left the factory with the 10p version. Darren

my 110 is now at the shop and we did the first high level inspection. What blew my mind is that there was engine oil in the engine wiring harness plug from the engine that seeped through all the way to the wiring junction. luckily only a smitten of oil so should not amass into a big bill to get that seal sorted ...

I have a '02MY that came with the Centre Dash but a 10P engine. It was originally a Demonstrator, so 100% positive the change over was not clean.

Just chiming in here with some intel' I picked up from a TD5 engine tuner the other day as it may be useful for someone. The 15P engine has the same bottom end as the 10P, different head, injectors and ECU. The 10P ECU needs the chip removing from the motherboard to re-map whereas the 15P ECU can be re-mapped via the OBDB port. In their view the 10P ECU tends to exhibit less faults than the 15P ECU.
