When I changed mine on the 2.4 it lost about two drops of diesel. It's absolutely minimum fuel loss and not something to worry about. I didn't do a relearn and to be honest, I was just glad it was running again and not going into limp mode all the time so did experience an immediate improvement in performance that got better over the next week.
It's a straightforward job, just two 5mm Allen bolts. The two bolts that came with the kit were too long so check the new against the old and reuse the old if necessary. Those two drops of fuel it'll lose will create a tiny air bubble in the system that might cause it to stall a few seconds after first startup but don't panic, start it again and it'll go. I used a small vanity mirror to have a look at the unit before starting just to get a mental image because your hands will obscure it while working on it and I couldn't get a photo with my mobile. Take photos as you go so you can check where the pipes and wires go, if needed, when you put it all back. Good luck. |

Keep the existing VCV fixings too, you may find the new ones are too long or too short.
I seem to remember I had to reuse mine which were in perfect condition anyway as the new ones were a little too long. A vague memory anyway. |

I think that should be the other way around. I had my mechanic change the one on my 2.2 and he said it was a pig of a job compared to to the 2.4. I also want to replace the VCV on my 2.2, but I'm afraid that the inlet manifold will have to be removed.
So far nobody has confirmed the opposite to me. |

Just an update on the VCV swap on the 2.2. New genuine VCV cost £160.00. To change it I removed the map sensor & LP return lines also cable tied the loom back.
It’s tight to get in even with the bits stripped back & had to cut an Allen key down to get in and use a dental pick to get the connector off. Regarding your problems with the fuel pressure… i have read that the fuel pressure pump inside the fuel tank can cause problems with „vcv“ symptoms, too, |

Many thanks for the “how to - with pictures and tools guide” Timcat. It’s the first one I’ve seen for the 2.2. Most probably because there are very few, if any, posts on the 2.2 having issues with the vcv. That seems to hold out as unfortunately changing your VCV has not fixed the issue, hence likely it’s not vcv related.
As landhank points out it may be your pump or potentially fuel lines dented and thus restricted due to rolling off the hilly track earlier in the year. |

Interesting points Ianh, we had this issue of the LP return pressurising before the roll & since stripped the fuel lines / tank dropped & lift pump inspected / filter head off & inspected / vcv replaced / LP drain off hoses replaced twice / the one way valve ( breather) is clear / fuel cooler un-damaged!
I’ve spoken to several specialist diesel technicians & suggested leaking back past the injectors and or pump all have said possible but not probable due to it running like a watch & no other issues! Any thoughts gratefully received |

Sorry, I wasn't aware you had the return line problems. Of course it won't be the pump... Its easy to check the return flow of the injectors (at least that was the case with 2.4l engines). Simply place a hose from each return port into a jar or empty bottle and start the engine. Now all jars/bottles should fill slowly and evenly. If an injector is actually defective, you can see it very quickly. |

It’s not the injectors or the pump I’m certain of that because it runs like a watch. I had an interesting conversation with the head mechanics of ford & Landrover yesterday afternoon in windhoek ( same franchise)
Both said what I’d done is exactly what they would have done & the only thing left if the fuel cooler as there’s a valve in it apparently? Must have spent half an hour with them, both concurring that injectors & pump are fine due to it running so well. |

Hello, yes we did. It turned out to be a crack in the inlet manifold blowing oil residue up under the LP drain off! All fixed some time ago.
