It is supposed to be under the seat box.
Glow plug relay from wire colours: Brown Yellow/Black Brown/Orange Green/Blue Fuel pump relay from the wire colours: White/Purple Purple/White Brown/Orange Blue/Purple In descending wire size order.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The electrical library says it's C0215 which is the black relay below - (under the drivers seat)

And you're absolutely correct . The 2nd relay was slightly hidden from view due to fact that it was black and in a dark mucky party of the seat box with the colours you decribed. You've been sold the wrong relay, you don't need the 200/300Tdi timer relay. The glow plug relay is controlled by the ECM on the Td5, it is a 70 amp relay, part number YWB101300.

Wrong part, that’s correct for a Tdi but the Td5 uses a standard 70A relay - the ECU does the timing.
YWB101300 is the LR part num but any 70A relay from your motor factors will do. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yes you are correct it was the wrong relay. Have to say, after talking to my supplier about it, they rang me back and told me the same thing. Their datrabase said that was the only relay for glow plugs for a TD5. After a bit of searching they identified the correct relay, have ordered one and will be ready to collect tomorrow. FWIW, I labeled all my relays when I bought my Td5 years ago simply to make it easier to trace any possible faults when out in the wilds. Food for thought. 🤷♂️

So today I received the new relay. Before putting it in the socket i sprayed it liberally with contact cleaner .... and in the process the thick brown cable fell out of the socket .... minus the spade connector ....
Nect step order some replacemnet spade connectors ... one step forward ... slight shuffle back

So, curent state of things
Crimped and reinserted brown power feed cable into exsiting relay socket. Inserted new relay Turned power on and could feel/hear the relay engaging Disconnected one of the glow plug lines and attached a voltmeter 9.5v ... seemed a bit low battery has one of thise indicators saying ok/charge/dead disconnected battery overnight charge next day reconnected, turned key and ...... ... wouldnt start ... .. primed the fuel system ... ... endless cranking and eventually started ... ... ran for 45 mins got to temperature ... ... switched off ... .. tried to start again .... .... wouldnt , not a peap! So at this point I've got a warm engine thats been runnig cant be air/ fuel issue as it was running and literally off for 15 secs ,so am thinking its CPS related, but I'd replaced the one that was in there .. ... thing is on the one i took out the end looked a bit mangled and the sensor as flush with the body of the sensor whereas a brand new one has the sensor a few mm proud of it ... looked at lrworkshop.com and according to the diagram ... theres' supposed to be a spacer there, between the sensor and the block .... there wasn't .. going to check tomorrow and look at the CPS i just put in ... suspect will have to purchase new sensor and spacer! onwards and upwards !
