Sounds like a burst intercooler or intercooler hoss. Pretty common issue.

Check that the air filter cover is properly seated and clipped in place. A loose cover can cause a quite significant roaring noise.

It could also be that the turbo modulator has failed and the turbo is stuck in the full boost vane setting. This happened to me on one occasion (as a result of the engine harness chafing problem) and the result is spectacular - the air intake sounds like a Vulcan at take-off, small children and old folk would run for cover as I accelerated, and the power was awesome, at least until an overboost triggered the MIL and put the engine in limp mode.
It is truly startling how much induction noise there is with the turbo on full boost, so well worth checking. If the turbo actuator is working correctly, the link between the actuator and the turbo should park with the engine off in mid position. If it is at either extreme, then you have a stuck or malfunctioning actuator (as I recall lowest position is full boost). If it is at mid position it doesn't mean that it is working, but if it isn't there definitely is a problem. If a boost pipe has split, the noise tends to be a loud farty noise or sometime a whistle. The turbo stuck on boost sounds more like a jet engine. |

Whilst posters above may well be true BW’s explanation just above is very accurate as I’ve known similar before.
Often the linkage over time can become sticky too which can mean the EA fails to operate and then gets stuck open. I put a little 3 in 1 oil on the two linkages on the turbo and that has meant I’ve not had the issues again since. As as BW mentioned, it will trigger limp mode and MIL (amber dash light) and is not something you want to happen either. A hose split is a possibility though of course too, in particular check the one just above the steering column as this can rub on the hose they are very close as standard anyway. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

Had this after a service. The maindealer mechanic had not closed the top off the airfilter box correctly. Once closed correctly the roaring noise sound went. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Had similar symptoms to this a few weeks ago, unfortunately all the usual fixes of replacing boost pipes/intercooler etc.... didn't solve the issue. It turned out to be one of the 8 rubber gaskets that seal the inlet manifold to the block had split causing a leak on boost.
