Thanks, steelies for the winter, alloys for the summer.
I got the steelies for a steal, deal that couldn’t be turned down. £500 for wheels,tyres,with tpms,wheel nuts, locking wheel nuts and centre hub caps. Thumbs Up

Yes it seems nobody wants them, which is a surprise.

A set of five new steel wheels with tyres went for £330 the other day on Ebay.

Yes me too, l nearly bought a spare set recently but decided on alloys instead.
But l've since changed my mind again and will leave the steel wheels
on.

The only thing l've read, is that the steel wheels can start to rust after less than 12 months.

I have to say that despite my best efforts (regular cleaning, wiping with anti-corrosion product) the steel wheels on my Ford van rusted after a couple of years, and l had to replace them.

Hopefully the paint finish on LR steel wheels is better.

For those planning for long term ownership, what are you doing for rust prevention, if anything? Coming from a classic 90, the full dinitrol treatment was done to my chassis as early as poss. Obviously the new chassis is a bit different so the same rules don’t apply, but what would be advisable?

The ones on my 90 started to rust, nothing major, but there is little pin holes that the paint hasn’t got into which seems to be the cause of the problem.

That should be a warranty issue, although the wheels can be refinished for £60 per wheel so not the end of the world.

Another reason to get a spare set!

Same here, l was always spraying rust prevention into my chassis but l don't think the new ones rust in the same way.

lt might be worth spraying any visible parts such as suspension with a clear coat rust preventative to stop surface rust.

We did this on our 2020 Jimny and it still looks new underneath unlike most.

Jamie - from my working days and numerous drydockings of ships pinhead holes in coatings were a sign that the paint had been over thinned and the evaporating thinners or equipment cleaner (if spray machines were coming into first use of the day) sent a slug of thinners or cleaner through the paint sprayers caused them……….. it maybe that someone is trying to reduce paint costs or is not flushing through thinners or equipment cleaner for long enough before aiming the spray head at the area to be painted……… when you are painting 5000-7000 square meters of ship you can save a lot of paint to do monkey business with by over thinning it - the budget for paint on the last docking I did of a 400m long container ship was in excess of $4,000,000 - apart from the cost of any steelwork replacements paint was the biggest spend in the docking and it had to last 5vyears with minimal upkeep. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Wow $4,000,000 just for the paint on a ship. l had no idea it would cost that much, no wonder some ships look a bit rusty!

l always thought, why not just repaint that ship, and now l know why they don't

Prevention is the key for me. I took the time to ceramic coat my steelies in hopes of preventing rust. And unlike alloys steelies require constant maintenance to ensue nicks are touched up quickly. I'm using a white primer for such nicks.

We will see if my effort are working once I get through this winter ! Smile

The steel wheels do rust a bit. But they are so much better than the horrible alloys on offer.
