Changing oil/ filters can never do any harm.

Best practice seems to be 6k or 6 monthly.

totally agree. Plus its so easy to do with everything easily acessible. And with Halfords giving away A1 Magnatec at the moment its a dirt cheap project - less than £45 including filter. Laughing

nope, the Halfords one is made by Coopers and either theirs or Fram or Mahle are as good as OE IMHO and certainly better than Britpart. If I'm wrong in this assumption hopefully someone will tell me sharpish !

I change the oil + filter every 10,000km and after every overlanding trip. --

It's good practice.

I did mine at 1800 miles.

Yes, use a good quality filter (from a filter manufacturer), not a cheapo.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Would doing this affect your warranty at all, particularly if you use a filter that is obviously not OE (irresepective of whether it's better or not)?

purely from what I've read about a) the fragility of the Getrag MT82 gearbox and b) alleged quality issues regarding oil spec and quantity on assembly I will be changing my gearbox oil annually. Diffs and transfer box oil will be done every 2 years

No because at service time the old oil filter will be just a filthy black gungy thing that will be thrown away and all car manufacturers know that established companies like Coopers or Fram (as Martin says) produce filters to the highest standards - they just don't add the ridiculously high mark up that OE branded products often have. Once the basic specs are met the biggest variable in every car part designated for OE branding (when motor manufacturers' buyers go shopping around component manufacturers) is always price - every time. See how Toyota recently came a cropper when they bought less than perfect accellerator components because they were cheap. Whether its a good or bad thing today price is king

Somehow related. Changing the oil too often might be not a good idea beacuse of oil volatility. It happens in the first 3000-4000km of use and all lost fractions will go into your engine via PCV, turbo, inlet manifold, causing at the end more soot. Puma 110" SW
