You know how it is, Christmas eve and suddenly you remember the set of Hella 3000 Rallye lamps sitting in the garage.
So with a bit of ingenuity involving angle iron and G clamps this seems the only place they could go without buying a soft a bar. Some will hate the look but I like the retro vibe and these remind me of the Cibie Oscars I once had on a td csw. The question is would that be illegal? I cant try to check the pattern of the light beam just yet so before I get all carried away is it a non starter?  hella1 by Richard Holmes, on Flickr

Why not move them inboard and mount your number plate higher?

I suspect your only legal issue would be if the beam cut-off was compromised and the top part of the lens and reflector are more significant than the bottom in that respect, but they will cast a big shadow exactly where you don't want one. Alternatively stick them on eBay and use the proceeds to buy a smaller modern light which works better! |

Click image to enlarge I had KC daylighters (6") and now Warn dipping G4 approx 6 1/2" across in that position, straight through the top of the bumper without ever having a problem - but those Hellas do look a tag larger... HTH Keith |

This is what the Road Vehicle Lighting Regs says:
2. Position– (a) Longitudinal: No requirement (b) Lateral– (i)Where a pair of front fog lamps is used in conditions of seriously reduced visibility in place of the obligatory dipped beam headlamps– Maximum distance from side of vehicle: 400 mm (ii)in all other cases: No requirement (c) Vertical– (i)Maximum height above the ground– (A)Any vehicle not covered by sub-paragraph (B): 1200 mm Surprisingly, The MOT Testers' Manual doesn't say anything about position (I think it used to) so it can't legally be an MOT fail regardless of where you put them. the only issue might be if they are deemed to interfere in any way with the headlight beam. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection...tion-4-5-1 But, on a personal level, I don't think they look right  |

Personally I love the retro look and have traditional Hella spots on my bumper however I don't have the aircon grill that you do but mine still sit proud (I do have a Nakatanenga grill that is flush).
If you wanted to reduce the impact you could cut a few slats out of the plastic grill directly behind to reduce the overhang (I did this years ago with a different set of lights). Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Could you fit / make like a plinth the type that you put car badges on? AA / RAC and put them closer to the center of the grille?
