Front door stays on new galv bulkhead
Hi,

I finally got round to fitting the front door stays after installing a new galv bulkhead on my 90 but unsure of the correct way of mounting the bracket.

The bulkhead currently has no holes drilled in it (other than two that appear to have been used for welding the skins together?) and unfortunately I no longer have my old bulkhead to compare to.

This bulkhead has a thick bit of plate (maybe 3mm) welded exactly behind the area the door stay mounts to, presumably for reinforcement. Is my best bet to mark and drill the 2 main holes and then tap a thread into that steel plate as it will be too thick to use a rivnut?

Did the factory setup use rivnuts?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Matt. Matt.

Hi Matt,

‘Factory’ is indeed a thread tapped into that metal plate. M5 if my memory is correct.

Just to add though, I was trying to fit a Shielder bulkhead a few months ago and if the bolt between the inner end of the door stay, and through the top of the footwell was in place, the other holes didn’t line up, and I feel that larger bolt (M8?) gives the thing a lot of its strength. So just be sure that everything is lining up OK before drilling and tapping.

Even with my genuine bulkhead which I had galved, and which I fitted about 2008, I still had to run a tap down the threads as the galv had filled them in. Donald

Cheers Donald - that's useful info, I'll have a go with the drill and a tap and just watch the alignment with the third inner bolt Thumbs Up

Mdm - it's an early Shielder one, had no major issues during the build really, just fettling the last bits now Matt.
