Ok, I've done it again Embarassed

So since the last catch up the world went mad again and life continued, but not much happened on the Land Rover front as we all settled into the new normal.

So here is a very much abridged catch up of the last 2 years!

After much reminding from our mother we finally moved the fleet to my brothers new place some 6 months later. Thankfully no snow this time round so made the day go much quicker, and sadly no pics.

But we had a few family days out

The Defender was pressed into tailer towing duties for Scout camps, bit of gardening and general tip runs and even got the Sankey out once or twice

On the Lizard - cant decide if its a 110 or a 130 though. 130 with 110 rear van body?

It was on this trip to the Lizard I realised that the price of fuel was making our "free" holidays to the outlaws caravan about the same price as going all inclusive for a week abroad (not that we could go abroad at the time) so had a bit of a ponder. Dont worry the Defender wasnt going anywhere.

The other family car is a mighty fiesta

160k on the clock, a couple of former owners, one being the Met Police so I wouldnt say any of them would be considered careful, bought for the pricely sum of £400 from the Dad of a colleague at work. Good little runner, 50+mpg but to small to do holidays with a family of 5 and the associated junk that goes with it.

After a bit of ebay surfing, vans are out the window, the demand for staycation conversions and extra Amazon drivers having pushed the price through the roof, so we decided a big old Merc would fit the bill better

Great spec, decent history, to good to be true price.

Day 2 of ownership

Turns out it was suffering with the common oil cooler leak which I think was the reason it was punted on. Never mind, its only money Rolling Eyes

But other than that its being a sterling holiday motor (even if we did take the Defender during the half term holiday as the dogs wouldnt fit otherwise), and has been used for SWMBO's wool events to lessen the fuel bill and increase he profit a little.

That pretty much brings us up to date.

Yesterday was service and MOT as we edge towards the 8 year anniversary and 100k on the clock.
Dealers once again have failed it (high level brake light this year) and immediately passed it. They've also given advisory for discs and pads all round (still the original discs so not bad) and weeping front hub


Poor picture I know, screen grabbed from the health check video, but can anyone confirm, is it just the swivel hub oil seal that needs replacing or is it likely to be more? 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Turns out Id rang a mate one night in the pub to find me a 6 seater to do a booze cruise in with the lads.

Good little runner, oddly low mileage and paintwork so polished the rain beaded straight off.

You'll be pleased to know the Mighty Fiesta is still in ownership as well as my brother has decided the RS Turbo he's been dailying for 12 years needs a bit of a refresh. Id hang on to the fiesta if you can, cheap cars like that, that run for fun are a god send! my 306 that should have parted company with me, when i bought the 300 tdi, is a pure god send to us! I used my brains and got shot of the VVC rover metro that we had built for the defender in stead. My dad even said at the time not to get shot of it, as it was such a good car. It stayed and i have thrown money at it, to the point i am in talks with a garage that sorts out the MOTs, that i will invest in the adapter to balance the original none centre wheels. Next year once everything is bob on.

My mate bought a merc, but it had stacks of trouble, but then again he just buys the 1st car that pops up at him! I do like mercs mind, and did toy with replacing the 306 with one. But its got to be mega bomb proof. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Priocta, your not wrong. I find the fiesta a fun drive. Not the quickest by any means but very go kart like. Dont get me wrong, I dont think Old Henry had any thoughts it would still be on the road 170k and nearly 20 years later, and as result its full of operational quirks (drivers door lock is US, stereo wont turn off other than on the ignition and the volume control requires the knob to be held a certain way to name a couple) but I cant see us parting with it just yet.

The Merc is a lovely car, but your right they've loads of issues which invariably mean a specialist garage repair along with their specialist repair charges, especially as its just passed the 100k mark I know there are a few more jobs that will need doing soon enough to keep it in top shape.

Back to Land Rover things, the Defender has passed the 100k mark last week, then promptly holed the turbo/intercooler boost pipe again. 4 years pretty much to the day, doing the same journey when it split the intercooler Rolling Eyes 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Saturday morning was spent enjoying the very fresh weather, mostly wrestling the airbox free to change the damaged boost hose. Luckily my brother finally arrived and 45 minutes later it was all swapped and back together

I did consider fitting the alisport hard boost pipe given we are now on the third hose, but after seeing the price and then finding a genuine new replacement for a bargain price of £35, plus the support bracket (which I only have half of for some reason (although I have a suspicion)) for £10 I've gone all genuine.

Loads of clearance now and the occasional stiffness in the steering I had when turning and accelerating has magically disappeared. Dealers had diagnosed as a slipping PAS belt. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Time for another overdue update I guess.

First off, June involved a wool weekend with camping being the only viable option for accommodation, so we pressed the sankey into service. M6, approaching J16 1630hrs, and I thought I spotted something in my wing mirror, then we developed a bit of a shudder, more black bits visible in the mirror, but with no hard shoulder to use anymore with the genius idea of smart motorways, we pressed on carefully to the exit ramp so we could establish whats going on.

Odd that it had delaminated like a remould.
But where has a land rover tyre at 4.30pm on a Friday? Luckily we were 2 miles from a agricultural tyre fitters, wrong size (and he didnt have a pair either), but beggars cant be choosers and it was black and round enough would get us mobile again. I've now got the dilemma of sourcing a correctly sized pair, thus relegating a perfectly new tyre to "spare" which means it'll rot away before it ever wears out, or a 2nd "wrong" size to match as I've no faith in the remaining original tyre now not doing the same. I suspect the latter will eventually win out, but not an immediate priority

Rest of the summer went without fault, couple of long hauls to Cornwall/Devon for holidays and Scout camp, and a wet family October half term down in Okehampton.

Turns out the one thing I over looked when I bought the 110 NYE 2014 was the service, MOT and Tax would all end up landing as due around the most expensive time of year.

Anyways, after the annual phone call from the dealer to remind me the MOT and service were due I considered the merits of paying for the privilege of having the 110 collected and taken on a 50 mile round trip for an over priced service and MOT, with a courtesy wiping over with a dirty sponge. Turns out there was enough in the service plan kitty to cover doing the service myself, including front and rear brakes, plus the hub seal kit that I'd been procrastinating about for months, and my mate was willing to allow use of his ramp and experience for a suitable charge

and as much tea as you can muster as long as you werent OCD about the tea spoon

Whilst I'd prepared myself to need to do the hub seals both sides, in the end only one was needed, but whilst we had it apart, front discs, pads and wheel bearings as I thought there might be a suspect bearing on the NSF, so again prepped for the worst and all that.

Pads, not quite to the metal, but I'd rung my money's worth out of them, 56k miles/5 years I dont think is to bad.

New set of wheel nuts fitted all round from LRParts, having been reminded by this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic90298.html that I've definitely have a problem nut on every wheel

LED sidelight from Bearmach had started to fail, and as they are sadly no more, couldnt really claim on their 3 year warranty and picked up a wipac replacement. Totally different colour so I need to replace the NS one as well now.

And finally MOT yesterday, just over 8k miles this year.

Other jobs I know I've got to sort, rear brake discs and pads, ancillary belt was due a change as part of the service, but I forgot to pick one up, side light and I need to look at the door sill around the rear drivers side as this is starting to bubble. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
