Sometimes my wife persuades me to leave the comforting realms of "Spudworld" and venture out into the "real world" and meet people. Usually I am loathe to do this as the so called "real world" can be full of strange people. A couple of cases are illustrated below.
While attending a wedding, I was in the toilets of the hotel doing the business when someone came up and stood beside me and said "Mind if I ask you a question?" Naturally my mind took me back to those conversations I had with my parents about not talking to strangers. Then I began to think, maybe he was impressed when he saw me doing my business and wanted to know whether I used the metric or the imperial measuring system. Before I could utter yay or nay,out it popped-the question that is. "Mind if I ask you a couple of questions about your Land Rover? " Seems he had seen me park the Defender in the carpark earlier and had taken a fancy to it (The Defender I hasten to add). One of the stranger places I've had a discussion on my Defender. Once in a carpark of a shopping centre as I exited the 110 tdi, two females (30 ish) came over to look at the Land Rover. The conversation going something like this. First girl "Thats lovely, mind if I look at it" "I saw one like this on the telly but yours looks so big. It looks so powerful. Is it hard to handle?" "It's a lot bigger than my boyfriend's. And you keep it so clean" Trying to keep a straight face I opened up the door and asked if she wanted to sit inside and get the feel of it (The Defender I might add) In she got, with a little difficulty. All of a sudden she squealed and called her friend, "Look at this, it is so long" Needless to say she had discovered the gearstick.She continued" My boyfriend's one is so short compared to this. Look you have a second one,he only has one and that is stumpy" I was nearly apoplectic at this point trying to keep a straight face and not explode into laughter. Anyway she finally exited the Land Rover, thanked me and headed off with her friend. I got in closed the door and exploded-with laughter I might add. Like I say, the "real world" is a strange place, and I am glad I don't venture out too often. every one on site wants to know how/why ? i drive such a small vehicle as i am 6,4" easy i say i have been driving Land Rovers since i was 8 so have a curved spine and a dislocated elbow. I love it every one else thnks i am wierd, but everyone comments on how smart it looks. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
