I think you've got two separate problems. For the brake lights, it's likely to be a duff earth or connector in the offside corner behind the panel that conceals the backs of the lights.
For the reversing light, there are a couple of possibilities: 1. A poor earth is always possible 2. Some LED's are polarity sensitive so has it ever worked? If not, them try changing the wires around. 3. The switch itself may have failed, which is not unknown. I'm not sure which vehicle you have as you've posted this in the Puma section whilst your profile says you have a 300tdi. If it's the former, then you can see how I changed the switch here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/post733726.html#733726 Hope that helps. Thanks Darren, it’s a 2011 2.4 tdci all the lights where working fine before but it has been stripped down for some work!
I did test the reverse light with a length of wire from gear box to the reverse light and it works with new wire connected! Which earths should I check? |

The short answer is usually all of them. Sorry, I can't remember off-hand where the rear lights earth to. Thinking about it a bit more though, I think the high-level brake light has its own earth via the heated screen, which would instead point to a problem with the positive supply, as they're shared. AllOI can suggest is have a poke around of the wiring in the rear corner and see if anything obvious leaps out. Darren

Has the T box / gearbox been out?
If so, check the grounds on there, especially the one (stud with two ground eyes on) on the RHS of the transfer box. As LRA mentioned there are a few so worth checking them all, but these two grounding eyes are common to the rear wiring loom. So if the box has been out that’s an even higher possibility, or they just become loose. Tiny bit of loctite 222 low strength on the threads when refitting is ideal to prevent loosening over time. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Yep, well all of those grounds came out then and guess how I know what the culprit was.
I could be wrong but I’d expect it to be likely. The one I’m thinking is an approx m6 flanged stud with two ground eyes on it. On the vertical RHS of transfer box toward the rear part of the T box. Good luck. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Have you actually checked for power (12V side) to all those non functional items, or do you mean they just don’t work? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

That’s correct no power to them but power on the n/s brake light, power at the reverse switch on gearbox but not at light fitting

OK so if it's power side missing, then that is odd. Suggests a broken/damaged chassis loom maybe...
You say the transfer box earths are ok, but worth another check as these are easily left off. Have a read of https://www.defender2.net/forum/post845331.html#845331 Which wire did you check for power at the rear wiper? Do the tail (side) lights work ok? Thanks for your help Martin!
The earth on the transfer box was tight but I took it off and cleaned it sadly that didn’t help! I used a 12v volt tester on all of the wiring to check for power Both Side lights front and rear work, indicators and hazards are working on the o/s and n/s front and o/s rear but n/s rear indicator doesn’t work! The courtesy light contact switch on the rear door is also not right it’s making the alarm beep when arming if I disconnect the connector the alarm works fine (found a couple of broken wires on the trailer power plug soldered back together but hasn’t helped) |

Just tested the brake light on the trailer plug and that is working?
