2007 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Rimini Red
What a difference
I've just changed the oil in my 07 XS 90 I used Castrol magnetec 5w/30 and what a difference, silky smooth, quiet engine, no more diesel noise and roughness the whole drive seemed so much better such a change which begs the question what oil did my dealer use, or what oil does LR use. I would certain reccomend Castrol although not my first choice, Valvoline would have been my choice but not available for this model. Anybody know what the two little tangs are on the oil filter cover nut that says open, and the little arrow marked drain ? Very Happy

Mine goes in for it's first service next week and im worried about them putting cheap crap in. I'm tempted to take my own. I've been topping up (just once) with castrol magnatec 5-30 which says, keeps your ford car at it's peak for longer on the bottle. When you shake the oil container it feels like it's full of water because the oil is so thin. 130 crew cab

Hi there!

As I post some time ago, when we move from the Mobil oil that the dealer used to Liquimoly Leichlauf 5W-30 (LR specification) The difference in the MPG and in the driveability was appreciable. So my recommendation is stick in the LRs specifications allways.

Regarding the comments on how thin the LR specified engine oil for the Tdci is.This is a feature of the synthetic 5w/40 oil used. It is thin but once you start the engine the oil will whizz around your engine faster than you can blink. All parts are lubricated and virtually no wear should occur to your engine. The oil change interval might seem a little on the long side, as it did to me, but modern oils are engineered that way. Synthetics are manufactured to perform to certain specs in various conditions. Once you stick to the recommended service intervals you should be o.k. The thin synthetics seem to get black very quickly but an engineer told me that is because it is reaching all parts of your engine and keeping it clean. There is an excellent and surprisingly interesting chapter on oils in Tom Sheppards "Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide". If you get a chance read it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

What a difference
Thanks to the response about oil, I also think that 12k is much to long to leave oil in an engine considering how cheap oil is and its no hardship to change the oil, 40 minutes job done peice of mind, Use what the book say's, the right spec and the blend is up to the individual, I just spoke to my dealer and they use Castrol 15w/40 which in opinion is the wrong stuff, but if they are servicing a whole load of different LRs they are not going to stock a load of different oils, so next major service on mine I shall be taking my own oil for them to use. I do intermidiate oil/filter change about 4-6k.

We change motor oil every 10.000 km = 6.200 miles as per guarantee.
If I see in the UK the interval is quite long compared with us.

By the way, the only oil in Chile that fulfills the specs is not so cheap: 4.5 GBP per gal (If Im correct with the conversions)

Eduardo 4.5 gdp your so lucky we pay anything up to £30 gdp per 5Ltr /1gal for Castrol if like you say the conversion factor is right Thumbs Up

In central Chile, diesel fuel is ca. <= 50 ppm S as in the UK. So, I do not know why the interval difference.

LR suppose more gravity conditions like dirty road (not asphalted).....

not related to the fuel quality

I can't believe your dealer uses 15 40 oil(never mind admit it to a customer), especially for the price we pay for a service. If we put that grade of oil in the engine they would void the warranty. I would go elsewere. 130 crew cab

I had a long discussion with my dealers for the same issue 1 year ago (with a letter to LR UK explaining the situation) They were using a Mobil 1 10W-40 that does not fulfill any of the spects stated in the manual.

Finally 1 month ago they informed me that they will import the rigth oil. In the meantime I use a Liquimoly that fulfills all the specs.

Stick in the motor specs. Maybe using 10W-40 will be not a problem in the short-medium term but at the end will redude the lifetime of the motor.

By the way the cost of one 5 lt Liquimoly bottle is 80 GBP in Chile... (May be something wrong in the conversions Embarassed )
