Interesting as I'm watching this with interest,
I STILL have not changed my tyres, was changing to 18" from 16" Continentals. They have done around 50K now? Still fair tread to be fair. I'm sorry to say I was going down the BFG route purely for Looks, My Defender is a fun car now so looks over noise etc... Your right though the Prices (like everything) is going up and up. Frome when I started looking (maybe 2 years ago) they were under £200 each I also read some dubious reports about wet grip.... although this seems it was a 'bad' batch? I would not want to send all that money and fine the grip in the wet less than what I have currently? keep the options coming |

I was looking at Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT but they’re not EU compliant. Not sure it will change and get homologation, but hoping. The new Toyo Open Country AT is EU compliant but will not be in the EU/UK until spring. Both are very highly rated in the US and almost universally recommended as the go-to KO2 replacement, with lots more up-to-date tech in their design than the now dated KO2. And then there’s the KO3 which has been spied, but release date has yet to be announced. I’ve bout some Wolfs and winter hoops, which gives me a buffer until spring and hopefully access to one of the above. If not, I’m thinking Cooper STT Pro.

Stacey, as you’ll see from my post above there are some interesting new AT tyres on the market, including a spied KO3. I’m looking to keep a sturdy tyre look (I currently have KO2s), but looking for newer tech. MT and Toyo are both ahead of the game, it will be interesting to see what the KO3 offers. As for KO2 wet weather, nope, they’re not great. Not bad, but not great. Especially on damp roads when everything gets a little ‘slidey’. In the dry I like them a lot. Road noise? Well, the DC is soundproofed and I always have music or podcasts on, and they’re not too bad. It is a truck after all. Had those on a D1 and my experience was not a good one. On a fairly innocuous lane I had the inner side wall cut on two tyres and they were scrap. Chap behind me had BFG ATs - you could see where the same sharp rock had marked them, but there was hardly a scratch on them.
I haven't got a pic of the damaged tyres - but you can see my predicament with spare tyres! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge JB @Lodelaner Instagram Youtube greenlaning and other LR related content |

Lode laner, I had the same situation on a country lane near to my house, I pulled across to pass another car and lost both near side tyres, a stone ripped a hole in them. Those were budget Insa Turbos at the time, which must have had very weak side walls. Since then I've only bought quality branded tyres for a 4x4, well most of the time anyway!

One of my reservations about remoulds has been the original carcass and number of sidewall plies. JB

just a quick update. I ended up going with Falken MT01 mud terrains. I did give the devanti tyres some serious consideration and almost pulled the pin and bought them ( I could get then supplied and fitted for £120 per tyre) but i really wanted something more aggressive. There was a few companies online offering too good to be true deals on some of the treads i was after but alarm bells go off when you look into it so i never proceeded online.
After a quick chat to a local tyre company I got a great price for 5x MT01 supplied and fitted so i stuck with that, £135 per tyre supplied and fitted) Performance/noise etc:- i'm really pleased with them, yes they are noisier than the old bfg at's but i was expecting that so its not an issue for me, and performance wise I've had no issues. I don't drive the 110 hard on road so handling hasn't been an issue for me, the 110 accelerates, stops and corners fine. I've not had an opportunity to try them in icy conditions (other than a hard frost, and that was fine), but i have had a go in a dump of fresh snow before Christmas and they were great. The snow was causing a lot of issues on the local roads but i took to the back roads and it was great. they snow didnt last for days on end so i didnt get to really try them on compacted snow for a comparison. On soft grass they were also good, they done what a mud terrain is designed for and clawed along, the tread cleared well (and threw it all over the side mirrors, doors etc 🤣 ) Overall I am really pleased with them, and as a bonus they were £115 a tyre cheaper than what i was quoted for the BFG all terrains!! on a happy choice.
I'm not gonna mention the B word, it just seems between that and past EU tyre law We all are missing out on a range of really good tyres that would fit our needs. My darling of AT's (an actual All terrian yet confusing seem to referred as an Aggressive AT) the ST maxx still won't be in 265/75 or 255/85 even though you can in the states (this is more of a Cooper issue than a us lot stopping it issue) We have the Falken wildpeak AT3wa but not it's better built brother the AT3w and not the nicely chunky cousin the RT https://www.u-buy.co.uk/productimg/?image=...y5qcGc.jpg https://ws-tires.s3.amazonaws.com/falken/w...eak-rt.jpg The Yokohame Geolander is another i'd shortlist for a closer look but I can only find it over here in a 275/70R16 https://www.demon-tweeks.com/media/catalog..._Photo.jpg And the Toyo open country AT3 is another nice looking tyre https://www.toyotires.com/media/4236/opat3...4295830000 But again we only see the toned down A/T plus https://www.toyo.co.uk/uploads/image/11001.png Or as mentioned before the Mickey T Baja ATZ. anything AT in the uk is rather bland in the subjective looks department of "I doubt that will work in a wet field" BFG do still with some hiccups get their AT in and this will win some votes as to simple range of sizes and availability. But the cost difference is wallet worrying. As a reference in 235/85 the BFG is £205.49 each the ST maxx is £168.49 Not a small difference of £37 a tyre. The grabber AT3 is £175.99 a £29.5 saving per tyre. For me at least the 265/75 unicorn quest for looks-price-performance continues Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest |
