No lights TD5 110
Hey guys, looking to pick some brains.
I’ve got a 1999 TD5 110, out of the blue the lights stopped working. I’ve still got main beam if I pull the main stalk back but no side or dipped.

To get me home I’ve managed to put a cable from the 12v fag lighter to the lights switch, which works and also rules out the switch being faulty.

I’ve stuck a multimeter onto the incoming 12v (Brown/blue) cable and it’s reading 12v, as soon as I’ve turned the sidelights on that 12v drops to 0v.

Hopefully someone has an idea or two before I go down the garage route.

Thanks in advance.

Which switch do you think you have ruled out, the off-side-head switch or the dip/indicator/horn switch. Its nearly always one or the other which has melted.

Both switches as I’ve run a temporary 12v supply to the side/dip (little stalk) switch and everything is working fine.

Only the original Brown/blue cable has the power drop.

Without wanting to sound idiotic. You do not mention checking all the fuses for the lights. I presume you have tested them all given your abilities with a multimeter...

Yes, all fused check and fine. I’ve check the ones by the gear stick and the one under the driver seat.

I have a similar issue, I believe it's one of the headers behind the gearstick fuse box gone bad. My temporary fix is so good I haven't got round to investigating further.... Embarassed

Beat me to it miker.

From what I remember there is a header (connecter) between the fuse box and switch and then another one between the switch and the lights on the engine side of the bulkhead. The one on the engine side is prone to vibrating apart if the connectors lock is damaged..

Either way these are the next bits to check you are getting 12v to... or not...

Fantastic, thanks. I’ll try and take a look today.

Without sounding stupid, does anyone have a picture for what I’m looking for? Tried googling headers but nothing comes up. Thanks.

Ok courtesy of LRworkshop.com this is the link to the TD5 lighting wiring diagram

https://www.lrworkshop.com/wiring-diagram/...e-tail/td5

If you hover your mouse pointer over any of the text beginning "C0" (Header) or "C1" (Connector) a red box pops up. Right click and open in new window and you will see a photo of the header/connector. Plus pin numbering and wire coding.

For example Header C0286

https://www.lrworkshop.com/connectors/defender-2002my/C0286

or Connector C1264

https://www.lrworkshop.com/connectors/defender-2002my/C1264

LR Workshop .com is truly an excellent resource and worthy of bookmarking. The parts diagrams, look up and pricing is also brilliant. Thumbs Up

If you have lights when you pull the stick back for flash but nothing when in the middle or pushed forward for just full beam then it will be the actual switch terminals have melted on the stick!

Have had it happen on all of my defenders, I even carry a spare stalk in the shed for when it fails, Sod’s law says late at night on a Saturday! Hold my beer and watch this!

Not sure if you sorted this but i had the same issue and it was the 'pink' relay behind the dash that was faulty, replaced and all working fine since...
