Fan Pulley Bearing Change 2.2
The bearing that the fan bolts onto is knackered. When turning it squeals and sounds completely dry. This is on a 2.2 Puma, 2012 model.

So how do I change this? Does the cast iron part just unbolt, and I can somehow press it out, or does the whole cast iron part need replacing?

I took the right 13mm bolt out that's above the pulley, and this had oil on it, which makes me believe this could be bolted into the block oil way? So before I dive in and unbolt the whole cast iron part and get oil coming out, has anybody changed this bearing?

Yes, I have done so, as have others.

LR will tell you that the bearing is not serviceable and you must replace the entire plate assembly, but you can press the bearing out and replace it. I can't offhand remember the bearing type but it is standard, widely available, and not expensive (unlike the LR part). None of the fasteners enter oilways etc (at least, not on my 2.4) but there are two, one on each side, which go in sideways and are spectacularly inaccessible.

It is not a difficult job to do, just awkward. I'll have a look to see if I have a note of the bearings, although mine is a 2.4 not a 2.2 I imagine they're the same.

OK Got it off. I see what you meant by the difficult 10mm bolt on the side.

So how do I press this out. Do I just press from the back? I can't get the metal type plug out, although it is loose.

New bearing number 30BD40DF2 arrived and all pressed in.

Just in case anybody does this in the future on a 2.2 the red ring on the left near the alternator shows where the 10mm bolt is situated. I had to undo the 3 bolts holding the alternator and push the alternator back to get access. There was no 10mm bolt on the right.

Also the 2 bolts right above the main black pulley appear to go into an oil way, as when I took them out they had oil on them and some oil did come out of the bolt holes. It was just a weep, so I replaced the bolts while I worked on the the bearing.

I suspect, on reflection, that the two oily bolts pass through into the timing chain space and screw into bosses on the block. Probably the timing cover is sandwiched between the boss and the bearing plate when everything is done up, but oil would be able to seep out when they are removed.

Interesting that the side-facing bolt on the fuel pump side (nearside) has been deleted on the 2.2. On the 2.4 it is an utter swine to get to and remove so perhaps common sense prevailed. The one on the other side is one of a about 12 holding the ridiculous alternator mounting bracket to the block so does at least serve a purpose.

Its a satisfying joy, is it not, when you've repaired an "unrepairable" part!

Indeed it is. Just had it running to bleed the cooling system. It sounds so much nicer. Thumbs Up While I was there I also installed a silicone hose kit. The little elbow under the inlet manifold is a pig to get too. Just how many water hoses are need on the damn engine. Rolling with laughter Also did the air box modification. Thumbs Up

I got to admit the car without the belt and viscous fan connected sounded so smooth, i can only imagine that the warn bearing must have been masking a smooth running car!

I am hopeful!
