Just read a bit in LRO about this earlier today - never knew they were on about changing it...
http://road.cc/content/news/47090-road-saf...mot-regime Bad move in my opinion. Also it mentions in LRO that if you have your EGR blanked that could be an instant fail, although they're only discussing the possibility of that at the moment... |

It only works here in Germany because:
1) Most people are responsible and look after their cars between the 2 years (they take servicing seriously) 2) If they don't, Ze Polizei can (and do) confiscate their car if it's unroadworthy (even slightly) and 3) The TÜV (German MOT) is ridiculously thorough and a car has to be in almost new mechanical condition to get through it. That's why you can drive at 200+ (working brakes), in snow (winter tyres) and in old cars (they still work properly) - probably best not all at once On a tangent, it cracks me up - all the adverts on Sky about being hit by uninsured drivers - almost unthinkable here... Before I start humming "Deutschland uber alles" I should add that there are plenty of downsides to living here but I have to say the roads seem pretty safe. Go on then, shoot me down, I deserve it Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

In Ireland the MOT (or NCT,National Car Test) kicks in for private cars at 4 years of age. Then it is carried out every 2 years. Once a car reaches 10 years of age it is done every year. It is a very thorough going over.My 110 tdi failed one year because the chassis number was covered in waxoil and the tester could not read it. Said it was not his job to wipe it off. Some of the testers are utter morons. Commercials are done every year from year one. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Germany 7.2 road fatalities per billion km driven
UK 5.7 2009 figures. An X5 at 200km/hr hitting anything even after 10seconds of using the very well maintained breaks will result in a fatality. German males over 35 are lethal once in a car, I have come closer to death on Germany Autobahns than on any uk road, it is the only country that I ever have wanted to catch up with a driver and beat him senseless for trying to kill me, my wife and my daughter, by passing me in his 3rd lane of a 2 lane autobahn. you can make a machine as safe as you want, you can test it as often as you like but put a prick in control and some one will die, invariably the innocent. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

I think you hit the nail on the head there - 7.2 compared with 5.7 per billion kilometers driven It's a negligible difference, yet here we get everywhere much faster and even in snow. And it's not just about fatalities is it? The cars here on the whole tend to be newer, less polluting and just, well, nicer to look at. BUT you also have a point with the X5 - BMW drivers here tend to be arrogant ars**oles and will carve you up as soon as look at you. The only near-serious accidents I have had have been with those w*nkers Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

In Spain 10 year old 4*4s need an ITV (MOT) every 6 months.
