Squealing - clutch bearing?
The 300tdi is squealing a lot until the clutch is pressed in.
I think it might be the release bearing.
Is there a quick and easy way to replace this or is it a gearbox out job?

TIA,

Roy 300tdi 90 1996.

Sounds like the release bearing and no, transfer and main gearboxes plus bell housing need to be moved backwards.

If the squealing stops when you press the clutch pedal, it almost certainly won't be the release bearing, since the release bearing only spins when the pedal is pressed.

If the release bearing is a bit dry, it could squeal against the pressure plate spring fingers. Once load is applied on the thrust bearing (by pressing the clutch pedal), the friction between the PP fingers and the bearing increase, and the bearing might start rotating. I think in normal situation the thrust bearing is also spinning as there is still some contact with the pressure plate. Have seen lot of clutch failures because the fingers on the pressure plate got so worn against the bearing, that the release bearing simply pushed through them. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks chaps.
Sounds like a job for my local indy. I don't fancy having to separate engine and gearbox on my drive 😂 300tdi 90 1996.

Local indy did this today.
Sorted very quickly and all for about £220ish which I thought was excellent value. 300tdi 90 1996.
