That is very interesting, OleDave, and I applaud your effort and investigations. It tends to bear out the old adage that you get what you pay for. Ideally a set of further tests with a much larger sample size would take place to discover which of your two lights is the odd one, the one with the better beam or the one with the scattered beam.

One thing that I still have to take issue with though is your statement....

Since the light units do not have the approval markings required under ECE Regulations and because they presumably haven't been through the approvals process, they cannot be legal to use on a vehicle which requires TA headlights, irrespective of the beam pattern. Effectively legal in a Series 3 or earlier, but not a coiler. Passing an MoT test doesn't make them legal.

That's really helpful, thanks Dave.

Interesting to see that the MOT beam kit gave slightly different results than your test board.

Pleased to see that they could pass a ticket, as I may now try a set on one of my older cars (I've got a very unoriginal series 3 that needs better lights).

It seems a shame to upgrade a Series with LED's . It just seems wrong unless it's a daily use work vehicle. I think I would opt to keep it closer to original spec. Similarly I would not want to fit LEDs to my 1989 90 TD. "You are never to old to learn something new"

In terms of what Blackwolf says I'm wondering if is illegal for SP 4x4 to sell these headlights into to the UK or European market if they do not comply with the stated part approval tests and marking? "You are never to old to learn something new"

Like lots of stuff, it's ok to sell but not necessarily to use (in this case, on the road) Rolling Eyes Darren

Not illegal to sell, but it would be illegal to sell if you were saying that they were legal to use on the road on a modern vehicle, which appears to be the case here.

Hello blackwolf and all.

My goal was to determine if the SP lights were capable of meeting the vosa criteria for use in the UK, after reading through reams of rules and regulations then the test on VOSA equipment by an approved garage I achieved the goal that yes they can pass the MOT test with adjustments, that is my job done, as far as Legal, illegal or otherwise I will leave this aspect up to all you lovely knowledgeable members to debate further.

Regards to all

Ole Dave

I've got the same issue as OleDave in that I have SP 4x4 LED headlights and need to get through the MOT test. Having seen what OleDave did I will examinine my beam patterns and alignment before attempting the argument with the MOT tester. It not right that the test result appears to be at the discretion of the tester particularly if they fail on no kick up when kick up is not expected on these headlights. There is no rule that says Land Rover Defenders must have kick up when dipped. If both lights have a flat top and is between the 1.25% and 2.75% dip angle and no huge black areas below then they should pass the test. As for legality I think emphasis should be directed at the huge number of cars out there driving on the roads that clearly have lights maladjusted and encroaching in the dazzle zone. "You are never to old to learn something new"

MOT LED headlight legality
I'm just contemplating changing my Defender TD5 headlights units to LED ones. I asked a local Landrover independent specialist which he could recommend to which he said that they use two local MOT stations and one fails any Defender which has had its head light unit changed to LED ones whereas the other accepts them. It seems its a grey area.

Subsequently I ask the garage which I use for my MOTs about changing the headlight units to LED ones and he said that for a Defender it would be a fail as it needs an automatic level adjuster not as in the Defender a manual knob to alter the lights.

Reading all this thread it seems that its a lottery whether they get through the MOT and dependent on the MOT tester and his interpretation of the MOT special notice 01-21: headlamp conversions document.

Its a little shocking how misinformed or possibly ignorant many MoT testers are now.

A friend of a friend suggests you swap the headlights quickly with conventional for the MOT. Should only take a few min

I would never do such a thing of course

Donโ€™t forget VOSA can do on the spot checks anywhere, and headlights are easy to checkโ€ฆ
They are also obligatory lighting like brake lights too. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I agree LED lighting is a regulatory nightmare. Personally I had some bad experiences with LED light 'bulbs' failing prematurely leading to me driving without brake lights, so I have avoid them since.

Short of having lights pointing in any and all directions, I doubt any roadside inspection is ever going to check for that, unless of course its your classic American cop: 'dang: your rear light is broken, you are under arrest, sonny' scenario.

This might not meet the subject of this thread, but you get pretty decent headlights from Hella H4 conventional halogen with local relay wiring. $35 each, brand new and compliant. I have had Range Rovers and LR4s with HID lighting, nice till they break. Better light yes, but really is it all that required?

Unusual for both brake lights to fail simultaneously. Some cars have 3 brake lights. "You are never to old to learn something new"
