Another essential which I don't travel without in any vehicle is a hi-vis coat. With the modern standard of driving I reckon you'd have to be barking not to carry hi-vis.

That helps Sako - i’m so much more relaxed when I’m back on Anglesey than I am in Merseyside with it, it must be said, although I’m not sure if thats a false sense of security. |

Three years ago or so I was leaving a Billing event. I'd only driven a few yards off my camping spot and the 200Tdi in my 110 cut out dead and wouldn't restart. It was absolutely peeing it down and I sat there for a good few minutes contemplating. Mulling things over I had an idea that it was the fuel injector pump cutoff. I had the bonnet up and could see the cable was still attached but couldn't reach it [I'm 5ft 7 which is normally good enough for most jobs but not reaching in to this engine bay].
So I got the Seeley fold up step thing that hooks over the wheel that I had just bought from that very show. That got me up there and now it goes everywhere with me. Once I had access, I gave the cutoff cable connector a wiggle and tried the starter. The engine fired up and I was on my way. I got to thinking that I was lucky, but what if it hadn't just been a bad connection but a broken connector or an electrical failure somewhere in the harness? So now I carry in both my 200Tdi and 300Tdi a length of cable with a spade terminal at one end and a crocodile clip at the other, long enough to stretch from the fuel injector pump to the battery. |

Toilet paper. DC clamp meter. Builders gloves. Moisture trap, after cooler (which can be refrigerated), air tank.

The Bosch 10.8/12v angle grinder is brilliant. It can't do a marathon. But it can do the first cut quickly.
60mm od steel pipe 3.0mm wall thickness. First cut 2 minutes. Second cut 4 minutes. Third cut 7 minutes. But that first cut is impressive & it's a lot quieter than the larger angle grinders. Good to get into tight corners. If all else fails: Visitor - Freelander owner |

I have a fully equipped workshop at home and there's no way all that will fit in the back of the Defender. Therefore I think about what I could fix at the side of the road and the little things that can go wrong stopping progress.
Every time we've failed to proceed, it's been an electrical fault. Therefore I carry some spare cable, connectors and the matching tools including a multimeter.. Along with fuses, relays, cable ties and duck tape. Given that it's a Defender I also carry recovery kit. Maxtrax, soft shackles, straps, shovel, ratchet straps and high lift jack. If there's a major mechanical failure, mobile phone and AA membership. |
