Rain X is helping a bit lol
will do some investigating but suspect stalk, one wiper has been playing up so a wheelbox is on its way out as well! Dash out for not the first time! I might send it to my mechanic this time round and let him do it! She broke down on Friday night!
no fuel getting to engine from tank, no pump noise at tank so suspect fuel pump gone so thats another trip to the garage to sort this out plus the wipers, VCV and injector seals and some better steering lock stop bolts as the 285's are rubbing on the front arms at full lock. hopefully that'll be it for the problems for the rest of the year!

my bad, the RAC man thought it was in tank pump hence no noise thing, but I forgot!

Oh no! Not sure VCV can cause it to die completely, only rough running.
Has it got any error codes? Unusual to die completely > 110 XS Double Cab |

The VCV can fail completely but if it does it is likely to cause low fuel rail pressure (either by not allowing enough fuel through the the HP stage of the pump or by allowing so much that the fuel rail PRV pops). I don't know if this would actually stop the engine dead so it doesn't run at all, or if it would simply misfire to the point of not being runnable. The diagnosis quoted above is really too vague to be much use, does it mean that no fuel is getting to the injectors, or does it mean no fuel is getting to the fuel pump? If the latter, it won't be the VCV, but could be a blocked filter, blocked pick-up in the tank, air leak in the line between pump and tank, fault with the filter head, blocked tank breather, or something along those lines. I'd be inclined to disconnect the fuel line at the fitting by the inlet manifold and pressurise the tank to see if fuel comes out. If fuel is getting to the LP stage of the pump but not the injectors, then the VCV is the usual culprit but it could also be the pump itself, either the HP or LP stage, or the fuel rail PRV, or an electronic fault meaning that the injectors are not firing or the VCV. However if there is fuel at the pump then the pressure in the fuel rail should give a clue. How did your man diagnose no fuel at "the engine"? |

it was the RAC that did first diagnosis in the dark, I was tired and hungry at 11.30pm at night after waiting 7 hours for them to turn up!
Its now in the garage and the mechanic is working his way through it replacing the VCV and injector seals, he discovered the wrong injector clamps are fitted (from Previous Owner) so ordered correct ones, He has also partially removed the dash to replace the wiper wheel boxes and found the wiper motor full of water from a leak so he's plugging the leak and installing an new motor! He said the Vac pump also failed so new one is ordered! This defender has been poorly maintained by the previous owner by the looks but luckily got it at a good enough price! New Denso VCV installed and started right back up
still stalled/cut out when cold so mechanic did a leak off test, 2 injectors were outside range, so all are removed and sent off for testing and refurb. Wiper wheelbases are being installed, hopefully have it back next week! The saga continues
turned out all injectors needed a rebuild as all were out of range £600 later and the fuel rail is over pressurising, mechanic reckons the fuel pump as well! So if your filler neck is leaking or holed, dont leave it too Long as all the  from the wheel spray gets into tank is my theory with all these issues. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

Have you done the VCV relearn after replacing the injectors?
Injectors will likely be letting in less fuel now they are rebuilt so the VCV may well be sending too much fuel to the rail. > 110 XS Double Cab |

It certainly does, that’s the end result of the VCV failing it gets worse and worse until engine begins to cut out completely. It’ll usually cut out when cold just after starting, on idle or when just pulling off from a stop. That’s how I knew mine was going under, this is after the rough running symptoms when cold. Once VCV was replaced, all was good never did it again and self learn with no programming either. But yes, rough idle when cold and lacking power top end are the early symptoms, but cutting out is the latter stage with failed VCV. Which leads people to think fuel pump failure or other issue when it is actually the VCV. I expect many fuel pumps have been replaced at cost due to a failed VCV worth a fraction and a 20 in job to replace. Not to mention the relearning which isn’t needed. If there is any suspicion at least the VCV isn’t expensive to replace if it’s a suspect. Mine lasted 12 years with no issues, some don’t last a few years. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

So after a winter without my 110!
