Immobiliser Issue?
Afternoon Folks,

My 2011 2.4 which has been faultless since I bought it is causing me woes with the Immobiliser (I think)

I went to start the Defender last week and:

Lights came on the dash as normal
Turned key to start and nothing whatsoever.

Assumed dead battery and had to work away this week. So came back to it this morning and stuck the charger on it. But the voltage is good. Over 12.5v at the battery terminals.

Red immobiliser light is constantly on. And the horn will beep twice while trying to start occasionally.

The fob isn't working at all. So I changed the batteries. Tried the buttons again and it locked it. But wouldn't unlock or do anything else.

Got it open with the key and it was completely dead. Nothing would work. But funnily honking the horn did bring it to life and allowed it to start!! Took it a drive however the red immobiliser light was still on.

Tried bridging the instrument plug 3 and 4. Nothing.
Checked the relays. Nothing.
Plugged in my fault code reader. Nothing.

I'm at a loss I've searched the forum to lots of suggestions but I'm out of ideas.

Appreciate any help.

some experts in the field will be along in a bit but if I remember correctly:

Disconnect both battery leads and hold them together whilst repeatedly depressing brake peddle, this somehow resets the alarm.

Reconnect everything making sure the terminals are properly seated and tight.

Press unlock on fob several times to re sync the fob to the module

Hopefully it will work.....

Fob re sync procedure

With vehicle doors closed and unlocked ( I leave a window open) take new battery out of fob and then hold both buttons down for 10 seconds to drain residual power.
Battery back in then press lock four times and unlock once. That will sync the fob back to the ECU.

Note, an indication that fob battery is getting low is the red alarm light on the dash has remained when you have been driving the vehicle.

If not fixed once fob bat and re sync has happened, do all doors central lock when vehicle is locked with key. If not then potentially door wire is broken and blown 10AS alarm fuse.

Another potential issue is the ignition switch is faulty.

However I think it’s the fob batt and resync issue, make sure new bats don’t have plastic cover on and in correct way around. Plus only have one with you and on key ring when starting as fob needs to be near coil by ignition to work well and having two fobs in vehicle can confuse it on occasion.

Update : I threw the defender on the charger as I'd been messing about with it and left it a few hours. Strangely seems to be sorted?

Fob works and it's starting and light goes out?!

Sounds like your fob battery was low/ dead, replacement has worked and so has re sync and now all ok. So expect all will remain ok.
Your main starter battery is very unlikely to have caused the issues you highlighted, more likely co incidental during your endeavours to rectify the issue.
