Heavy knock on startup
Got the knocking on startup on my12 plate 110. 65000 miles
There are threads for the problems on the 2.4 but I can't find the reason for the 2.2
Any ideas please. Goes away after warmup and seems loudest from main gearbox.
Keith

Not the mounts or exhaust but Mk it is an internal noise and slight reduction when depressing the clutch.
Perhaps clutch is on way out but strange as noise goes away at warmup
Cheers

Did you get a resolution to this Keith? I get a double knock immediately on turning the key. Cranks and starts fine and is only there when cold. Any idea from the collective, 2.2 not 2.4.

Should have added, makes no difference if clutch is in or out.

If it was a 2.4 I'd be thinking of the PCJ problem, but a 2.2 shouldn't experience this. There was, as I recall, a problem with the variable-volume oil pump on the 2.2 but I don't think the symptoms matched yours.

Thanks Blackwolf. Interestingly I did a double tap on the heater plugs this morning and it started without a knock, so the temperature seems to affect it. I’ll try this experiment out again over the next few days and see if I can prove the theory.

Been trying this out. When I turn over from cold immediately after the glow plug light goes out I get the knock, if I let the heater run on I don’t. Could it be diesel knock and a potential injector problem? Or glow plug?

There are no issues with the engine actually firing up.

Apologies for slow reply but thanks to others above who have tried to help.
Yes I still have “the knock” it could just be the diesel knock from a 120k engine however pointers towards the clutch are also correct. Depressing the clutch pedal does takes away the significant knock and rattle and of course one won’t know until a clutch is required and replaced.
On another point……
At what mileage intervals would we be replacing the timing chain? My serpent belt has been done but one can’t see the internal chain.

I asked the timing chain question to my local Indy recently who said there isn’t an interval. He had a listen to mine and said there is years in it yet!! These engines are a non interference engine anyway, so if it does fail I don’t believe it will cause any damage.
