Deer Whistles
Do they work?

Last autumn I had an unfortunate collision with a deer whilst travelling on the A9 near Dunkeld (near the Land Rover Experience place!). Fortunately the road was quiet, and I managed a glancing blow rather than full-on. Still some damage (I stopped the car and searched the road and verge with my torch, but never found the deer), but I have seen cars really mangled (and people hurt) after an altercation with a large stag. Last weekend I saw 3 large stags at the roadside, and one in the road. Fortunately I was able to miss them.

So...deer whistles:

The jury appears to have failed to reach verdict. Anyone got any ideas? How to not hit a deer? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I've got them on my defender, had them for years and living in the New Forest there are plenty of deer about. Im my experience the deer tend to look upi when then hear the, so do the ponies and cattle that roam the forest too. It's that movement that I tend to notice and more often than not the headlights pick up their eyes if its dark making me more aware.
I also tend to be more alert when the rut is on as they tend to raom more and now with programmes like autumnwatch etc encouraging more people out and about the deer have tended to move from their usual rutting stands and areas crossing roads in many cases.
So do they work I think they do

Interesting. The missus had a very near miss with a deer on the A66, so I'd be interested in anything that could stop it happening again.

The Wikipedia article seems to suggest that deer whistles don't work? Mind you, it is Wikipedia and the way the article's written isn't very scientific Rolling Eyes

I have the same problem when in the Defender as I see tons of deer. However whenever I have a rifle in my hands I never seem able to find them? So maybe the answer is to carry a rifle in your defender? Whistle Laughing
