Central Locking/Alarm - Intermittent Issue - SOLVED
Hi all,

My 2016 Defender 110 has this intermittent issue with the central locking and alarm.

It's intermittent as there are times where the central locking works as it should, locks the car and no sound from the horn. However, most of the time when I press the central locking button, I get the double beep from the horn afterwards.

I read on another post that this could be due to one of the door/bonnet sensor not working properly. However, I'm not sure if this could be the issue, as it works sometimes and other times it doesn't.

The other issues I've noticed is on the odd occasion when the car locks normally, the alarm would go off after say 30 seconds. And when the car doesn't lock properly, the horn will go off in a series of four beeps, which will repeat itself in intervals a few minutes apart. Again this occurs after set time from trying to lock the car. These issues are rare occurrences though.

I have a feeling these issues are all related to an issue with the as10 module or another component in the alarm system. Though I could be wrong here.

I have previously taken the dash off a number of time to install a new stereo and install soundproofing at the bulkhead, so I wonder while doing this I've forgotten to plug something back in or disrupted a connection somewhere. I have checked the as10 module and all connections are there and properly seated.

Has anyone experienced this issue before or is there someone who knows the central locking/alarm system well to know what the issue could be?

It could be a door/bonnet sensor but I suspect it's something else.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Sounds like classic poor/defective door switch. If it’s regular disconnect a switch and test.

I do hope it's just that, as it means I don't have to take the dash off again. However, testing this may be difficult when the problem is intermittent.

I'll check all the door and bonnet sensor with a multimeter first. 2015 Defender 90 SW Corris Grey (in Australia)

My first start would be to unplug the bonnet switch, and leave disconnected for a couple of days.

I would have a look at the link wiring to the doors.

I had a similar issue with central locking not working when I first got my defender. Turns out it was a damaged cable in the door link (inside the rubber tubing) were it was trapping when the door was being shut.
Had to remove the door card and repair the cable and all was well!

Hope this helps 👍

I had exactly the same changed all the door light switches and it’s fixed for now!

Just reporting back that I’ve managed to solve the issue.

It was as simple as the screw holding the driver’s door sensor in place being very loose. I don’t think it was the original screw, so it worked it’s way loose over time. I replaced it with a tighter fitting screw. I’ve had no issues since then.

The reason this was the issue is that the screw grounds the connection for the sensor. If you look at the door sensor when off the vehicle, you’ll notice the metal section behind the base of the sensor. This connects the pin that depresses to the screw hole, where the screw then grounds it to the bulkhead.

Pleased you've managed to resolve your alarm problem. I think most Defender owners are aware of the problem with the wiring to the doors but maybe not so aware of the earthing connection for the door switches. Defender 90XS SW
