MPPT Solar Panel Charge Controllers
Hello folks,

OK, so not specifically about a Defender, but a trailer that gets towed by one...

Does anybody know anything about solar panel controllers? Our camping trailer has a 120w panel that charges a pair of 105ah batteries via an older style 10 amp charge controller. This works absolutely fine, but I understand that MPPT controllers are more efficient in that they can extract more power from the same panel, which seems like a worthwhile upgrade. I started to look into it but there appears to be a bewildering array of MPPT controllers and so I wondered if anybody had experience of something suitable for this sort of use?

Buy a victron smartsolar in the right size and never worry about it again (IMO)

Thanks, chaps.

Andy, is there something in particular that I should be looking at on that page? I can find those controllers and others all over the place but narrowing down the choice is the tricky part.

Mike, what's the reasoning for choosing the Victron? Is it just one of those things that's 'reassuringly expensive' as mentioned elsewhere on here the other day or is there some technical reason why it's better? Taking the page that Andy has linked to for example, is there any benefit of a £109 10A Victron over a £47 10A EPever? Darren

They're reliable, the app has great functionality, the price isn't too much higher than other options. The screw terminals are good quality etc. All the off grid/camper/boaty folks I know use them too!

They also make a huge range of other solar/off grid/DC system stuff, and so far I haven't found fault in any of the bits I've used

Another vote for Victron, no other brand should be considered for off grid Thumbs Up

Darren - Give them a call, they are very knowledgeable and I'm sure would answer your questions.

OK, thanks all. I'm just waiting for a call back from Sargent, who supplied the control panel and existing charge controller, for confirmation on compatibility before I commit myself. Darren
