LED Headlights
Has anyone had problems with replacement LED 7" sealed Headlamps? I bought a pair of DEF black Crystal LED headlamps from SP 4x4 (SP panels) they claim to be E marked so should be legal in the UK. The MOT ruling on these upgrades is rather confusing. It now says the motorcycles and Cars may not be considered illegal if they have been upgraded to fit LED headlights. A very strange and ambiguous requirement I feel!!
My ones also come on when running just side lights, this can't be right can it? Sounds like an electrical return path problem.
Any help or advice is welcome.

Cheers, John "You are never to old to learn something new"

The MOT ruling is about fitting LED bulbs to existing headlights, not about complete LED headlight units. As long as your headlight units meet the relevant standards then there's no reason why they should be an MOT problem.

The issue with them coming on when just running side lights is because your Defender has the headlight dim dip feature, which isn't compatible with LED headlights. There are lots of threads about this completely redundant feature and how to disable it. Here's a starter for 10:

As above, however if your headlights emit more than 2000 lumens I believe that they require headlight washers to be fitted.

I have no idea how you find out whether your headlights emit more than 2000 lumens (unless the spec tells you) or how you find if your MoT tester knows this, can measure this, and will do anything about this, except my submitting it for an MoT!

Thank you both. I briefly came across the dip dim thing yesterday and talk of a pink relay. I just need to find it ony 2007 puma. I think from what I've seen it's on the fuse board below the steering wheel.
As for legal light output power level I'll have to look onto that with the manufacturer/supplier. They are E marked which I'm assuming are legal without need for a washer system but I'll enquire. Thanks again

The easiest way to disable the dim dip is to unplug the resistor, which is trucked away under the drivers side wing. Darren

Thanks Martin but any idea what it looks like and where under the offside wing? I've had a quick look and it's not obvious. Not much at all under the wing. "You are never to old to learn something new"

I seem to remember that it's basically a big coil, a couple of inches long. I haven't got any pictures but there is one in one of the threads about this. Have a search for dim dip resistor and see where that takes you. Darren

It's a little bit forward from the aerial mounting hole, between the aerial and the blanking plate on the wing top.

Yes spot on. Its just in front of the aerial and held in with one m10 nut. Basically a 1 Ohm power resistor bolted to a heat sink plate. Easy enough to access when you remove the Faux air intake grill on the top of the RH wing.
Thank you everyone.
As usual Defender4.net provided the answers.

Sorry to butt in, I nearly ordered a pair of these lights last week, what do you think of them?
Are they well made and brighter, I have wipac crystals and upgraded bulbs, but am looking for a whiter light

They are certainly very bright and very white. I've only had a short use driving at night and so far ime very pleased. They also look so much better visually. For £66 a pair they seem very good value.

Do you have an elephant in the back, or do they need adjusting? They seem to be lighting up the top of the hedge better than anything more useful!

Although looking at the colour that might be the old ones.

These were both main beam. The yellow originals passed MOT alignment only a few months ago the white LED are only roughly adjusted and need alignment at the garage. It's a bit misleading as both vehicles are angled towards the hedge. Probably not a good set up for alignment checks but the intent was to demo brightness and whiteness "You are never to old to learn something new"
