I hope you are refering to Indian Pale Ale! Weirdly propan-2-ol (Isopropyl Alcohol / IPA) is not a great degreaser it is too polar and has a poor affinity for grease and oil based contaminants, it does not really like to dissolve them. A better solvent would be something like hexane, methyl benzene (toluene) or di-methyl benzene (xylene) all of theses are less polar and dissolve oils and grease really well. My chemistry tutor always reminded me that “like dissolves like” so yes propan-2-ol can be used but in conjunction with a wiping with brake cleaner/carb cleaner/cellulose thinners. I know I am going to be shouted down here ........ and I nearly didn't post this information......
You need to inform your insurance company if you paint the callipers other than the original color they came. Google it .... it's a thing .... I'm ready for the onslaught ................................. |

No, you're right, and the reason is because the colour the calipers are painted says a great deal about the mentality of the driver. Brightly-coloured calipers are likely to increase your premiums. I am hoping that a dull, boring, sedate, sensible graphite grey colour will reduce mine!

My wife would agree with you - I must be having a mid-life crisis. (I did have XR’s in the 80’s which has affected my judgement). There was a cracking Harley Davidson advert in the 80’s - ‘grow old disgracefully’ I’ll get the anthracite or silver paint on order ![]() |

What? really? Why on Earth? It's a protective coating. Does this mean we should inform our insurance bods if we waxoyl the chassis or paint the engine pulleys to prevent corrosion ![]() ![]() I would like to think if I called up my local NFU office and said hey Dafyd just thought you should know I have painted the brake calipers on my Defender to prevent corrosion he'd just laugh hard and loud down the phone at me ![]() |

Having only recently done this job on Miffy I can tell you I was surprised how long it took for the brush on paint to cure fully.
But... Once cured it is hard as stone. I think part of the problem was the porch I was painting in was not very warm, so used our dehydrator to help the curing process. You could use a kitchen oven I suppose at its lowest temp. Maybe. The dehydrator can go as low as 43 degC. It still took 4 or 5 days to do the paint job well though. I needed the paint ASAP and ended up with apparently wannabe Porsche yellow ![]() ![]() Anyway they look great behind the Boost alloys and under the Oslo Blue paint. Plus the brake dust appears to just wash off as well. Only time will tell whether the effort was worth it... ![]() Ultimately I figure that when it comes time for the pistons to need replacing the body of the caliper will be in good shape. Hopefully ![]() I will say this though. Fitting new functioning calipers, MC and servo has transformed the braking of Miffy. Much more so than when I fitted drilled and grooved discs and uprated pads. |
