2.2 Defender OEM injector issue - knocking/rattling
I think this is my first post. Smile

Since I installed 4 OEM LR032067 injectors supplied from the reputable UK LR part online retailer, I have been suffered from the engine knocking. Because they were new ones bought from the reputable retailer, I assumed that they were okay. To rectify the issue, I changed the high pressure fuel injection pump/fuel pump in the tank (tho old parts look okay) and performed injector reset/VCV reset/other resets. However, the noise was still there.

I have done further investigation and finally found that the supplied injectors are not for my vehicle (defender 2.2). The injectors given were VDO A2C59517051 which should be differentiated from VDO 2910000177400. As per the VDO catalog, those two injectors are clearly differentiated from each other. The VDO2910000177400 is only for defender and A2C59517051 is for transit/Citroen/Mazda/etc. I attached captured images below.

I contacted VDO and they said VDO291000177400 would be LR032067. So, I contacted the retailer and they contacted their supplier. Their supplier said that they had no single issue with previous sales over 200 injectors and A2C59517051 is compatible with the defender 2.2. I don't think this is correct as the "manufacturer" differentiates the application of those injectors. I'm also waiting for another reply from VDO on this compatibility.

Anybody having the similar issue like mine? If you have some and think your issue is due to the incorrect injector part, can you send a complaint to your vendor/retailer/supplier...?

I would suggest to them that lack of reported problems with their parts on other vehicles does not indicate that the part is the correct one for the vehicle.... you've got documents that show the part is wrong. End of story. They should change them.

Did you replace the injector clamp bolts / copper washers?

Clamp bolt changed and copper washer changed (new copper washer was already installed on the injector). injector coding is done. Minimum injection quantity reset is done. High pressure pump is replaced. Fuel filter changed a couple of time. Fuel pump in tank is replaced. Common rail with pressure sensor is replaced.......

I'm still wating for the confirmation from VDO on the in-compatibility. I'm also thinking about Ombudsman. But it will be easier if the retailer/supplier admit thier fault because I live in the country out of UK...

I'm not sure if it is okay to expose the name of the retailer....

Once you've got to the bottom of whether you've got the correct part number injector or not, you need to code the injectors in the ECU. Each injector will have a tolerance code on the top of it from the factory which provides the engine ECU with a tolerance map throughout the range of how much the injector can deliver so it can compensate to get the fuelling exactly right as no two injectors will be identical.

You need a fairly expensive diagnostics tool to re-code injectors though, more than a simple code reader. It'll run without re-coding, but it won't be 100% right.

Injector coding is done using LR diagnostic tool.

VDO sent me an e-mail stating that the correct injector for "Land Rover DEFENDER Platform/Chassis (L316) 2.2 Td4 4x4 (L317) 2011-2016" should be 2910000177400. I contact the retailer again and wait for their response. I hope them act wisely.

Don't they offer a free return within 2...4 weeks ?

If so and if I was you, I would not hesitate ...

Here is an update.

I'm still wating for the retailer's response.

In the mean time, I got a set of 2910000177400 from a different supplier. Now, the problem is solved!!!!!!!! The very distinct knock sound at 3rd gear between 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm is almost gone. I still hear a sligiht amount of clatter/rattle/pinking sound but it is definitely tolerable level!!! I'm currently waiting for a couple of injector re-learning cycles to be done during driving.

So, for you, beware LR032067 is VDO 2910000177400!!!!!!! This information is worth more than £150. I bought the total of 8 wrong ones before I got the correct one. HaHa.

Here is further update.

After 3000 km with correct injectors, 90% of distinct rattling noises are gone. I still have some but it is within tolerable level. Now, I am very satisfied with my 110. Smile

Unfortunately, the seller refuses my refund or replacement request even with confimation of wrong injectors from VDO (manufacturer). I understand somewhat because the order placed more than a year ago. The only option that I can do now is a legal action. But I think I need to give up because I do not live in UK.........Oh...my wasted time....... my wasted money.....

Please beware ordering OEM LR032067 from LRdirect. If it is supplied by Britpart like mine, it is very likely the wrong one. The wrong one is only for "Transit". It is not for our defender puma tdci 2.2. They are different from each other.

There must be lots of suppliers doing this - and similar with generic parts.

I bought a load of body parts from the same supplier, some of which were body 'pop' rivets, listed as OEM the ones supplied were just std rivets, not sealed Advel ones that they're built with - annoying but small beer and not even worth the phone call to complain.

Back to OP problem, there should be enough transits in your part of the world you can sell them on to??

Yeap. Thank you for your suggestion. I'm thinking about selling those transit injectors on Ebay because there is no use to me... I just wanted to avoid any hassle and have a full refund because this is not my fault.

Did you need to re-program the Engine ECU or did the ECU learn the new Injectors ?

Not sure my Gap-ID Tool will be able to update the Injectors details.

I’m pretty sure the GAP IIDTooL can code both the Puma 2.2 (6 digit code) the Puma 2.4 (16 digit code) Injectors.

Whereas the Nanocom can code the 2.4 injectors but as yet not the 2.2 injectors, this has been highlighted to Nanocom as their docs infer they can code the 2.2. To date I don’t think they have rectified this.

The issues with Nanocom support for the 2.2 puma are highlighted here https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic80973...om+working[/i]
