2013 110 USW

Watching this thread as it will be interesting to see how many clutches are replaced due to outside influences ie caused by leaking slave cylinders or replaced as a consequence of a failed spigot shaft. Defender 90XS SW

1st clutch change August this year: 2007 90SW, 80K miles, clutch springs rattling so replaced along with slave cylinder.

- first clutch changed due to slave cylinder failure - but clutch it self was changed due to poor condition at the same time - clutch under warrantee - not sure of the milage at that time. - 2nd clutch changed 4 yrs later after intermittent problem - proved to be spigot bearing - clutch and other systems in good order, however LOF clutch fitted and both master/slave cylinders changed at the same time for upgraded versions, as was the output shaft at the same time. 2013 2.2 110SW
Clutch / slave cylinder and spigot bearing replaced at 69K miles. Slave cylinder seemed to be sticking when operating the clutch pedal which was the reason for doing the work. Fluid was very dark even after recent fluid change. Clutch plate material was fine although springs were loose. |

from memory original replaced at about 11k rattling replaced by LR second rattling when car was at about 22k (11k ish) replaced by IRB with LOF roadspec LOF one rattled the transmission worse than the knackered LR ones, it rattled the transmission annoyingly for about the first 10k or so but has slowly settled down and is now at 44k (22k) and not rattling the transmission nearly so much, now infrequent (I believe LOF may have addressed this on later drive plates with different damper springs in the centre) I didn't see the first one but the second one had very loose main springs although they were not about to come out and the flywheel and pressure back plate were unmarked DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I have had mine (3rd) clutch fitted today, it was a friction plate spring that had let go on clutch no2. (Luckily came out between the friction plate and cover).
Flywheel in good condition @ 88k and output shaft also in good condition again at @88k. So new MC (I fitted that). slave and clutch kit went in. Output shaft and splines regreased and refitted and flywheel fine as it was which is the original. I thought this thread would be interesting, as you can see a bit of a pattern between wear characteristics as each person posts. I am hoping this time will have more longevity to it, hopefully. 30k miles for clutch, but only because I had the gearbox out for the slave cylinder. Also did the power output shaft. Clutch was in pretty poor condition too. Puma 2.4 2010

I'd have to dig out the records for exact numbers but as I recall my 2007 Defender is on its fifth clutch with number six waiting to go in asap, and every one has been replaced due to the failure of the springs in the driven plate. It is on its second slave cylinder (I replaced the original when I fitted the last clutch at about 150k miles because it seemed a good idea) and original master cylinder. Clutch five has done better than the preceding four and has lasted 110k miles but now has no springiness in the driven plate and is pretty unpleasant. It had the first two clutch changes under warranty during its first two years and was on number three by the time it reached 30k miles.
There is no doubt that the early Puma clutches were really, really bad. They have improved however, and are now just not very good. My next will be a 4x4 Transit driven plate which is supposedly better. We should however be thankful that JLR did at least revert to a single mass flywheel and sprung driven plate and move away from the disaster that was the TD5 DMF. |

What DMF disaster on TD5? Have seen quite a lot of cars, with more than 300 000 km done on original clutch and DMF. On our D2 I have 240 000 km on original DMF, at 140 000 km clutch was replaced, because of gearbox overhaul, and it has still 50%. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

Blackwolf, what clutches have you had fitted, have they all been standard LR or a mixture of aftermarket types?

Up until now they have all been genuine LR of whatever spec was latest at the time. The one I have waiting to go in is a Transit 4x4 clutch, since I've heard good things about them.
It is worth noting that the first clutch in my '07 lasted under 10k miles, the most recent 110k miles (more than twice the mileage I've ever got from a TD5 DMF, by the way). LR has slowly managed to improve them. |
