I replaced my "crystal plus LED bulb" with top-quality, type approved LED units, which produce a significantly inferior main beam but are broadly comparable on dip.

What ones did you fit? I went back to Crystals and miss my Tuck Lites but couldn't bear the though of smashing a £600+ set of head lights on the farm. The horse had nearly nutted one of the Truck Lites in the yard...

As I recall they are JW Speaker, but the slightly earlier type (they were pre-owned when I bought them).

Don't get me wrong, they are much better than the original factory-fitted H4 lights, but not as awesome as the crystals with LEDs.

When was your last MOT, Jim? They shouldn't fail because of anything to do with the beam pattern but just because they've been deemed illegal. If the test was recent then you tester has either just missed them or isn't aware of the changes.

Ironically I took my crytals/LEDs out and fitted the integrated LED units last year (or maybe the year before now, I forget) because I assumed that my MoT tester would fail them, as he is now required to do. In conversation with him I mentioned what I had done, and he had no idea that he was meant to check for non-TA LED bulb conversions and as a result there would have been no problems whatsoever with the LED bulb set-up! Now of course he knows. Doh! Rolling with laughter

That doesn't look like a classic car LEDs Headlamp bulb !

Indeed not, this is what they should look like:

The substantial heatsink screws onto the back of the bulb once the bulb is in place. The connector is on a flying lead.

Edit: the second photo (which crossed this post) just deepens the mystery, especially as the bulb pictured doesn't match the one in the photo on the box.

Oh dear! Perhaps they have undergone a "value engineering" process. That doesn't bode well.

Update: after checking the Classic Car LEDs website they appear to be the £48 "poverty spec" bulbs, not the £65 premium version.

Poverty spec: https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/products/...rade-bulbs

Premium: https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/products/...sion-9-32v

Be that as it may, if they don't fit the headlight I think I would be having a conversation with the supplier. I appreciate that geography is not in your favour though.

Okay looks like I'll be fitting the classic car LED globes, many people over here run 7'' LED's, I've found mine to be worse than the original high crystal Osram night eater halogens so I'm going back, I live and work remote so need good lights, I've ordered brand new HC lights from Paddocks and will order the Classic LED globes and give them a go.

Just some feedback, fitted a locally supplied loom, brand new high crystal bowls with classic car LED's and the results are spectacular, I've owned my Tdi for 24 years and she finally has the best lights, not just the best but THE BEST headlights she's ever had, I don't see any reason for anything else, you want good lights do what I did, you'll never regret it.

Glad your happy with them! I agree that it is the best lighting combination, it is just infuriating that here in the good old ECE some half-witted bureaucrat who probably wouldn't know his you-know-what from his elbow has decided that using this combination is a mortal sin, even though it passes the mandatory annual beam alignment test.

Thank goodness we live in a free country!

Sorry LRA, I missed this one.

MoT was last December. Will be interesting if it fails in a couple of months time Confused
