Is there any protection offered by safety devices L138?
Am I right in thinking this is really just a styling bar? Could I connect internally from where it joins the roof down to my bulkhead delete bar to form a proper cage around the front seats?

Cheers
Col

The bulkhead delete is more designed to support the sides of the tub. It is not connected to anything substantial. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Cheers Dinnu. How about if I clamp from where the bulkhead delete bolts through the rear wheel arch, to the jacking tube? This might already be in a safety devices kit, but their installation instructions are so woeful, it’s hard to tell if I’m trying to reinvent the wheel here! I don’t want a full internal rear section of the cage as I need the space, and I’m not keen on the look of a full external cage.

That would add some stiffness. Although without cross bracing, not sure how much gain there is. Just my thought. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Cheers Dinnu. I think they do actually do a kit that does encapsulate the front seats, but the website descriptions aren’t great. I’ll give them a buzz in the week.

Hmmmm.

Given it is not actually fixed to anything structural then I remain unconvinced - it has to be better than nothing but how much better? Rgds.

If not anchored to anything it may actually increase the risk of collapse rather than attempt to stop it....

Co1 - we should be doing group buys as judging by past posts, we're often looking at the same upgrades at the same time Very Happy .

I've been looking at this cage too for my NAS build.

My understanding is that the current Safety Devices functional front cage closest to what you've described (the not reinventing the wheel-reference) is a L138/7 (see here: http://www.safetydevices.com/expedition/pr...76/1774/). And, for my needs, its the closest thing currently made to the cages fitted to the NAS 90 SWs.

However, one section of that is the front hoop which they sell separately - the basic L138. It seems, looking at the drawings to be the same components back to the roofline, just missing the in cab and through-tub supports. The full L138/7 kit comes with a bar that looks remarkably like a factory bulkhead removal bar but would replace it adding further support to the cage structure.

So, and I'm not an expert, my understanding is that the hoop you've linked to is a key part of a legitimate, roll over protection cage, but without the rear hoop (which may be available separately from SD) would not give true roll-over protection.

There is a really good set of images on this thread of how the "full" kit fits: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic57472.html . I note on the SD website that they describe the basic L138 as a "style" bar kit.

Thanks for the explanation Gasket - I just could not work out some of the mounting arrangements, makes much more sense now! Rgds.
