You are probably a 36 Spline, but as always with Land Rover check, take the Steering Wheel Nut off and the Locking Washer and this will allow you to count the just visible splines...  Click image to enlarge As for what Steering Wheel... that will be down to personal choice, I have a Startech on my 90 and love it, all be it expensive, I inherited it and in reality don't think I would pay full price for one new. I have just fitted a Momo Quark on my wife's 110 which to my judgement feels really good and is excellent value, certainly when compared to the Startech, near enough 4 Momo Quark's for the cost of 1 Startech. Depending on what Steering Wheel you choose you will almost certainly need a sized Boss (with the right number of splines) to install the Steering Wheel on the Defender these Bosses usually have a 74mm PCD arrangement...

I put one of these in... Momo TUNER Black Steering Wheel - 350mm - SKU: PM276 It's considerably smaller than the original and as result creates more elbow room, you just need to match it with the correct spline boss, mine was 36 spline on a 2003 CSW. Pretty hard wearing too as the steering lock is on and off and it hasn't got shabby in over 4 years so quality item and worth the money. The only downside is a smaller wheel slightly obscures the clock dial but that doesn't bother me. Click image to enlarge |

I went down the momo prototipo route - wood rim because I like the look and feel plus at the time it was unusual to see - sadly it became a 'look' for a certain type of resto mod defender and you see the bloody things everywhere
I love the additional elbow room with the smaller wheel (and have not had any steering weight issues) plus took the opportunity to fit the now ubiquitous Optimill security Definitely worth checking your spline count as suggested above - mine did not match the expected specification - probably due to a repair/placement done on the cheap in the past Also, make sure that you are supplied with the indicator cancelling pins on your adaptor boss if you do not go down the Optimill route - they are not always included |

Click image to enlarge Prefer something more basic looking, like the Defender, for me. I would also say, it’s not worth fitting any boss apart from a quick release one. A great facility and takes no more room than a standard boss. All the defenders I’ve had the Mudstuff guide to wheel, and spline numbers has always been correct and where I get my wheel and boss from. |

Maybe now is also the time to consider a quick release boss and Optimil swivel lock. Both these and a Momo wheel can be had for less than the price of a Startech. (Lovely as the Startech wheel is, it is extremely expensive). Defender 90XS SW

Thanks for the great pics - always helps to see how a steering wheel looks when mounted. My 110 is already at the workshop so i'm sure he'll be bothered quickly with the missaligned steering wheel position and will pry off the existing steering wheel shorty. Will need to tell him to count the splines to order the correct Momo boss kit. In Switzerland the quick releases are difficult to get registered. so a fixed solution is easier to manage...

The steering if not central maybe because the link between steering box (drag link) and primary wheel is the wrong length. Ideally you want to central the steering box (there is a fork that lines up with hole for this) then centre steering wheel to that. If not then traveling straight adjust drag link (bar that goes from box to wheel hub).
