Respray Defender 90 bonnet
Hi all

The recent baking hot weather followed by torrential downpours has made the lacquer on my Epsom Green Defenders bonnet delaminate in a few areas. I’ve looked for one in better condition online with the intention of just doing a swap but have had no joy.

I went and had a chat with a body shop that was recommended to me and was told that to respray the bonnet and blend it in with the wings would be £850… Shocked

What money should I be looking at for this?

Jim

I would sand it down and spray it black Raptor.

Great for standing on as it is less slippy and black contrast looks good.

Should be easily done for £50.

That figure is outrageous. I have used several sprayers and they charge on average £150.00 a panel. I had a bonnet sprayed a year ago and because it was classed as a large panel but needed no masking I was charged £250.00. I would shop around. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

That price is very high, as for blending in to the wings I would have thought that as it does not touch them and is at right angles to them, so light reflects in a different way between the panels, it would not need blending in.

Is painting it black not a consideration? Contrasting colours are still in vogue currently Thumbs Up Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

The lacquer is peeling on my roof.

I'm intending to get the roof and the wheel arches sprayed Santorini black.

I'll then get the boosts powder coated black, swap the grey grille / headlight surrounds for the santorini ones, replace the bonnet lettering and get some of the shiny wing mirrors.

But if £850 for just a bonnet is anything to go by, this won't be happening anytime soon!! 2011 CSW XS 90

Hello jim4244

A friend of mine has just had his bonnet resprayed + both front wings,
niagra grey on a 300 tdi of similar vintage to yours all for £750,
with all panels removed, the result was very good, all be it that he then paid
an extra £150 to have the rest of his 90 mechanically polished to make the
overall job look 'balanced'.

£850 feels high, you could also consider having the bonnet wrapped for around
a 1/3 of this money... Question

I got the body shop that did the warranty work to price up sorting a couple of blemishes on the truck a few years back. The quote was eye watering (£2500). I'm sure they would have done a top notch job, and they were a Land Rover approved body shop, but I politely turned the offer down.

Was watching Bangers and Cash last night (the series where the production team try to restore a classic vehicle). They did an MGB up and Derek remarked how he wasn't keen on 'specialists' as (and I am para phrasing) its just an excuse to charge more.

We have a cracking bodyshop up the road from us. They have all the facilities, but have no approved status with any company, and do a really good job at a reasonable price. They did some work to my Dads Fiesta after I drove my Land Rover into it (long story) and touched a few car park scraps up for him. They also resprayed a friends 90. It's true, you get what you pay for, but you don't need to pay top dollar for a decent job.
