Hello lightning
I'd try both the sprung and air options and judge which is best for the majority of your driving to see if the air option overall makes sense... it may in itself justify the cost just for towing with the ride height selection (as I understand it). We have 'only' the old school coil sprung Defenders to judge the towing experience a 2010 90 and 2011 110. Our 540Eriba's loaded weight is 1200kgs with a 'standard' nose down bias / nose weight (which I have yet to measure) both vehicles tow this caravan with ease, being essentially the same width and height as a Defender...we are almost always the smallest on site (if you discount the VW Transporters). Personally as has been discussed with Air Suspension it's good until it isn't, time will tell if it's got longevity, worst case with the older 'analogue' set up is that you could swap it out yourself with some relatively simple tools having watched a couple of YouTube videos. I tow a 1450kg mptw caravan with my New Defender 90 HSE D250.
I have the deplorable tow ball, and air suspension. Only towed 200 odd miles so far and it compares very well to the Discovery 4 that I had. I particularly wanted the air suspension for the ride comfort, off road use, and the ability to raise or lower the suspension on the occasional time that the jockey wheel has either run out of height adjustment or has too much. I assume the Commercial has the buttons just inside the rear door to manually operate the suspension height like the normal models. If you have the Al-Ko 3004 stabiliser, then there is another post on this forum about how people have over come the arm from fouling the bottom of the spare wheel on hitching up. Hope my information helps you decide. |

Thank you for the information, l think it may be too late now to alter the specification of my 90 Commercial as it's now being built in October, but l will ask the question.

/dɪˈplɔːrəb(ə)l/ adjective deserving strong condemnation; completely unacceptable. shockingly bad in quality. I hope that isn't the case, but it is a Landrover! |

I think the deplorable tow bar was the one that would fall out of the rear of a Discovery Darren
