Intercooler hoses, the intercooler itself, or a gasket between turbo and manifold or manifold and head are the most likely.

Sounds like your intercooler has a split, generally at the crimped seam at the bottom left if standing in front of the vehicle. You can generally see some soot there as well.
Else it could be a hole on the bottom of the hose from the turbo to IC as steering column can rub on it or if a 2.2 on the 90 degree hose that connects to the inlet manifold Do you have a code reader as it should show a DTC which helps confirm. Edit :- BW beat me to it... again |

only the day before yesterday I found my steering column was rubbing on my turbo to intercooler hose, mine is a 2.4 and it is not holed yet, have ordered a new hose and the alternator bracket designed for the 2.2 which others on the forum have told me also fits a 2.4.
Just need a free day to get it fitted, in the mean time a bit of string is holding the hose clear. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I think yours is a 2013 2.2, mines the same and the IC gave out (split at seam) 6 months ago, with same symptoms, it’s a common issue as is the 90 degree elbow at the inlet manifold getting a hole in it. The hose from turbo to IC is less likely to get a hole on the 2.2 due to a bracket being fitted to keep it from rubbing on the steering column.

Sometimes the actuator getting sticky can be similar too.
With the clearance between the hose and steering column, what on earth were LR thinking? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

If you can’t find a hole in the easy to access hoses, then it might well be that right angle hose connecting to the inlet manifold, which is hard to see let alone access, or a intercooler split. I’ve had 2 hoses split as well as the intercooler over the last 3 years. I took mine to a garage & asked them to smoke test which found the problem 2 out of the 3 times. The other time, when it was that right angle one, smoke testing didn’t create enough pressure to open the split.

Found the hole in the hose going into the inlet manifold right on the bend.
So I will now get it swapped |

I’m on my 3rd Silicone hose! First one was probably my fault and not cutting back enough so it rubbed on the steering rod linage and the second wore through just by the 90 bend and the pulley, looks like my engine has a bit of flex and the pulley touched the hose on full swing! 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

And here is your guide for doing that 90 degree elbow. Inc pics and various ways of doing it depending on how big your hands are
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic81674.html?highlight=pipe Ps BAS do the silicon elbow. I renewed all with a full set from BAS when I did MY BAS IC and main rad at same time. |

If yours is a 2.4 then you have different hoses than “Claydiggermud” who has a 2.2. The 2.4 has two hoses where as the 2.2 has 3 silicon hoses with a metal pipe section between the output of the IC and the input to the inlet manifold. That small 90 degree hose between the metal pipe section and inlet manifold can hole and is completely surrounded by other pipes, so much so you can barely see it, so it’s an absolute pig to change, but can be done as per the topic I linked to. |
