Buying Advice MY2001 110
Hi,
I‘m planning on buying a TD5 110 and found a vehicle that fits my budget. I will definately inspect the car before buying but I already got a few pictures of the chassis to which I would like to hear your opinions to. The chassis has obviously been patched but is this worrysome to this extend?

Hello Christoph,

I find it difficult to say if this is done right or not.
If you do it right you cut out the rotten pieces and weld in a new piece.

Here it looks like a piece is welded over the bad sections. This way the rust could continue eat the chassis behind the patch and then further.

The massive rotten hole in the rear a frame would have me running or asking for 4k off the asking price.

Worth buying a cheapo endoscope with a light from Amazon, find a few holes in the chassis, then pop in the camera and take look around, see what’s going on. Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

You don’t need and endoscope, you could get your head in the hole in the rear a frame…

Thanks for the replies so far guys!
@lord-haggis the rotten hole is striking me as a bad overall sign as well.
@Muddybigdog thanks for the endoscope advice.

The owner says the car was/is taken care of by a Land Rover specialist.
The rest of the car looks very decent although it got a respray not long ago and so it‘s hard to tell as well. If anybody of you guys knows of a good LHD 110 near Austria shoot me a message Bow down

The chassis fail from the inside out, the endoscope will tell a lot more. However the massive hole in the a-frame suggests there could be worse going on.

If you can negotiate a discount and want to do a chassis swap with a galvanised one theres loads of options such as Maer in Poland who I'm going to get mine off come rebuild time.

The Land Rover is 21 years old, l guess it's time for a new chassis. You can patch it for a while but eventually you'll have to pony up £5,000 to get the chassis changed.

lt depends on a few factors, how much the Land Rover is, and what the rest of it is like. How many miles has it done. Which version is it, Station Wagons (9 seats) are worth more and the County/XS more still.


The best TD5 110 Station Wagons are now £20,000 or more. lf it's less than £15,000 then you could budget for an eventual chassis replacement and then you'd have a vehicle that will last forty years.

lf your budget will stretch a bit from that one, mine is going to be for sale in a couple of months.

No such issues with mine, it's likely the best TD5 110 you will find.

That is a fine TD5 Lightning... but not a LHD Wink

Meta87: I am also looking for a LHD 110 so if I see any I will pass them your way. To bring it back over the channel will add >20% to the cost and that's 20% too much on top of the "Defender Tax".

There is a good looking green 110 in Malaga at the moment https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155095745706?ha...Sw48Bi44xH It is poverty spec, but looks to a good example from a dry country. Apart from that keep an eye out on Autoscout24.com as there are loads on there to check out.

The key places you are looking for rust are the doors, bulkhead and chassis. If any of these have begun to rot away either ask for a substantial discount or walk away.

Ah, LHD l missed that !

We bought a TD5 90 XS that had lived in Spain and it was like new underneath. Sadly had to sell in lockdown due to financial issues.

Lord-haggis: chassis swap is an option but I‘d rather search a bit longer to find an „all in all“ decent example.
Lightning: thanks for your offer but as geo bloke already wrote I‘m searching for a LHD model.
Geo bloke: Nice to know that someone is in the same process/misery. I find AutoScout24 to be somewhat difficult mostly and therefore I try to search on a more local level. I found a very decent 110 (MY2001/180000km) in Spain and got the seller down to 15500€. Even looks like it still has the original paint on its chassis. It‘s gonna be quite the roadtrip but I think it‘s gonna be worth it.

Cars in Spain do rust, the ones by the sea for sure, also they have issues with clear coat due to the sun.

I have a puma that’s ex local council the paint on the chassis is perfect but this spent all its life inland.

Also the Spanish are very good at touch up jobs so ensure to inspect it well. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Race.it: thanks for your advice! The Defender I‘m looking at was only used inside Spain and was only used as a farmers vehicle (no towing) to get along between Olive trees. The last 10 years it was only used app. 6000km per year and was maintained pretty good (service history). It also has no top coat issues as far as the pictures go. It has indeed a good portion of mud on the outside and isn‘t tidy inside either but it seems to be a good „base“ vehicle to work on and all crucial parts are in fine condition.

Yep they love them here as farmers trucks, mine has dents but full service records and as these are like Lego you can replace all the bits not an issue as long as not rusty. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
