If you are going to tow then the D300 is a must.

lt depends. Who wants to buy into diesel now? l've got a 90 Commercial in order and if it could be specified with a petrol engine l would happily put up with the compromises when towing our caravan.
ln fact l am currently debating whether to go ahead with a diesel vehicle at all. How long before they are hammered for tax? Diesel is already more expensive than patrol and some cities charge more to park if you are in a diesel vehicle. |

I've driven both, and both drive extremely well. The choice largely comes down to your locality, Here in New Zealand diesel is a simple choice especially if you tow due to the way road and fuel taxes work here.
I have a friend with the P400 and the fuel economy really drops with any weight behind. I suspect too that real world fuel usage probably favours the D300 due to the way they drive. The P400 really loves you putting your foot down. Personally I plan to order the D300 when the time comes (ie when my Disco V8 is due to be replaced) |

In Japan, diesel is 20% cheaper than premium unleaded.
Factor in better fuel consumption and an easier drive with all that torque then it becomes a no brainer. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof IG defender_japan "Hulk san" |

In Oz diesel is currently more expensive that both 95 and 98 octane If you are looking at
Long haul and towing around Oz then yes Diesel is a better choice, dodgy fuel being the main issue in some outback areas as you would know. I went with the P400 as there were no 6 cylinder diesels on the horizon when I ordered and took delivery, so will stick to the wagon for our lap around Oz towing about 3.2t off road caravan. There seems to be plenty of options for 95 in many remote areas on the main routes, plus V8 Nissan Patrols have been hammering around without petrol supply issues for quite a few years.. Down to your use / requirements/ choice, the D300 is a great vehicle to go for.. pity it was not available when I finalised my build in early 2020 yet another pommie bar steward down under MY20 110 P400 SE Defender MY10 3.0 RR Sport |
